The Chequamegon Bay area native is living entirely off what he can find in nature around Ashland, Washburn, Bayfield, and the surrounding area. Everything from salt and oil to venison and wild rice must come from the land, with no garden to fall back on.

Greenfield moved back to the Bay Area in July and gave himself three months preparation time. He began foraging for all of his food and medicine and stocking up for the winter ahead.

Northern Wisconsin might not seem like an ideal location to forage because of the harsh, long winters, but Greenfield said that’s far from the case.

“Areas with long winters have a more prolific bounty in a short period of time,” he said. “It’s absolutely abundant.” More
