It’s a Fixer Upper

WION

A severely damaged 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Series I, marred by fire during a race in the 1960s, has been sold for an astonishing $1.9 million. While pristine models of its kind can command around $60 million, this charred relic managed to secure a significant price tag.

This particular Ferrari, one of only 13 featuring the Pininfarina spider framework, met its fiery fate on the racetrack in the 1960s. Left untouched for nearly four decades, it endured another trial when a 2004 hurricane decimated the barn where it had been stored alongside 19 other Ferraris, as reported by the Telegraph.

Despite the ravages of time and fire, the battered Ferrari retains its original chassis plate, gearbox, rear axle corners, and a 3.0-litre Tipo 119 Lampredi inline-four engine. More

  1. Might as well call it artwork. Nobody’s gonna drive that chunk of metal – ever – and keep it’s ridiculous value.

Just for show, which is the same as being worthless – from my point of view anyway.

  2. Here’s a true story if anyone believes it…

Growing up I fell in Love with the Ferrari Testarossa (1984) with the single LHS useless mirror in any colour other than red.

My dad’s P.O.S. Alfa Romeo (graduate movie) was having another “Italian Princess” moment in that it NEVER Ran The Same Way Twice. I HATED THAT CAR!

We dropped it off together at a Typical Italian Super Mario look-a-like Mechanics. I noticed a Red TR V-12 and asked the mech about it. He tossed me the keys and said, ” take it for a drive”.

I DID NOT BELIEVE HIM. The Fucking Keys WERE EXACTLY the same as the “Alfa Q” as I Called it.

I walked up to the car, the keys opened it to my disbelief & I sat in it. No One Cared.
Light Tanned leather, SHITTY Plastic Switches, orange numbered guages and an uncomfortable seat with FUCK ALL visibility esp. rearwards. The “Lefty” only mirror was high up completely USELESS.
RIVETS were clearly visible on The Gills at the side feeding the v-12 radiator.
Sitting in the thing felt like CRAP.

I exited the PROM QUEEN and tossed the keys back to the mech. and said “No thank You, it doesn’t feel good.”

He laughed, my dad thought I was nuts, & the mech said, “Everyone wants one until you have to do the service on the V-12, the V-8’s are better.”

20% of me regrets not driving it, 80% of me prefers THIS STORY!

    Cheers! – I’m an Idiot.

The friends Jag V-12 sport I drove felt Like a car on the inside, was beautiful and probably even LESS reliable.

PS. Sometimes my wife lets me use her 2014 Subaru – RELIABLE!

  3. SNS,

    Black Daytona.
They also had a Corvette Kit Car for the rougher scenes.

Once in a while, in Woodbridge, ON, there is a Red Ferrari F-40 that hits the road. I have seen it a few times.

Correction: HEARD IT a few times. LOUD with Backfiring

Its a race/track car, not a road car.

  4. “The battered Ferrari retains its original chassis plate, gearbox, rear axle corners, and a 3.0-litre Tipo 119 Lampredi inline-four engine.”

And that’s all you need. Everything else can be hand made and the winning bidder will actually make money in the end.
