AT has an interesting take on Japan’s implementation of the death penalty. Once all the legal niceties are concluded, you get stuffed in solitary. They do not tell you your scheduled execution date. Every night when you go to bed, there’s a chance you will be woken in the middle of the night, marched to the gallows and hung until dead. They let you stew like that for months. It’s intended to be punitive.
