Jim Brown in the End Zone

ESPN-

Jim Brown, one of the greatest professional and college football players of all time, has died. He was 87.

His wife, Monique, announced Brown’s death in an Instagram post Friday afternoon. She said Brown “passed peacefully” Thursday night in their home in Los Angeles.

“To the world he was an activist, actor, and football star,” the post stated. “To our family he was a loving and wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Our hearts are broken…”

In 2020, Brown was selected to the NFL 100 all-time team and also was ranked as the No. 1 all-time player on the College Football 150 list to celebrate those sports’ anniversaries. He was named the greatest football player ever by the Sporting News in 2002.

When I was a kid this scene was illustrative of extreme heroism-

The when we got a little older, this was even more admirable –

  1. I was too young to have ever watched him play, but I’ve seen the highlights enough times to see a strong man among the not quite strong enough. He could have played 5 more years at least but got out healthy and with a more lucrative career. The greatest of his time. Too bad our times don’t live up to Jim Brown.

That was TIM Brown, not Jim Brown. Tim was a star player, but not a superstar like Jim

Still in all, what a great movie. Best collaboration between Mathau and Lemmon ever

On a personal note, Lemmon had the exact same mannerisms as my Dad .. and Mathau was a dead ringer for My mothers older brother, Johnny

  3. My Uncle Wally took me to Browns games from 1961 through 1968, including the Championship game vs Baltimore. We had season tickets from 1965 – 68. I got to see Brown play all that time until he retired in 1965. He was brilliant! And maybe he never had to face Butkus, but he dueled with the great Sam Huff many times, often coming out on top. Brown is definitely the best running back I’ve ever seen.
