  1. Spent many a day in a duck blind with a dog looking over my shoulder and me looking over his to spot those evil ducks. When they’d spot them I’d know because they’d get small. So much fun. Hope I get another run at that.

  2. Years ago, I was talking on the phone to a buddy who happened to be one of our K-9 officers, then I hear he yell…”WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?” Followed by one of his kids saying WOOF WOOF WOOF!!! I asked if it was his partner, and he said “No, it’s a couple of mutts my wife is dog sitting…Butch don’t do shit when he’s not on duty!”

  3. My compliments to all who choose to train these dogs. It is a grueling experience. Dogs are capable of so much.

I was on the ski patrol for 30+ years. I was involved with training multiple dogs who were going to be responsible for finding people who were buried in avalanches. The training exercises were not easy. The dogs were trained to ride chair lifts and snow mobiles. After being transported to a (simulated) avalanche, they had to wander over acres to find people buried by snow.

Between the handlers and the stars (dogs), they were able to find me every time. 12K feet of altitude, high winds (20 – 50+ mph), victims buried 1 – 5 feet under the snow. Suffice it to say, if I am ever trapped in an avalanche, I want these beautiful canines on the job.

My tribulations during the training – irrelevant. The dogs and trainers had to deal with mind numbing exercises and the handlers and dogs never failed.

I remain in awe of there preparations and abilities.

If you ever see an animal in a vest for training or real life, thank them and the handler. Do NOT approach and pet a duty animal when they are “live”. Just thank them and move on or watch. It may be the best show you have ever seen, and it may save a life.

Thank you all who have accepted the responsibility and the dogs who can learn these techniques.

  4. Very real tears here. We lost our senior Reba 2 weeks ago she was a dropout from a K9 program. Blue German Shepherd. We still have 3 pups but the pack is missing her lead.
