Now that police investigators have begun their forensic examination of Notre Dame’s destroyed roof, it’s time to start talking about replacing it. But why cling to tradition when the world is full of modern architects wanting to make a name for themselves for the greater glory of secular progressivism.
Many are proposing design concepts that do away with stale old tradition and boldly embrace modernity. How about ditch the wood and tiles of centuries past and replace it with gleaming glass and steel? Add a crystal spire and you almost have yourself a skyscraper for the ages.
How about a Muslim minaret as repentance from the French for fighting against Algerian independence in the 1960’s? Here
Better yet, let’s take that glass and steel idea to the limit and turn the roof of Notre Dame into a giant green house. Here
They don’t have the ability to build it back to the
same quality or strength as the engineers and masons
of old. I’m afraid the rebuild will reflect the crumbling
culture of France; built on the sand of godles socialism
with a Potemkin facia to hide the rot.
Leave it exactly as it is so people remember what happens when you invite savages into your country
…the current antipope would be more than happy to add the minarets himself…
Maybe we should change the Mona Lisa to have it on black velvet
Just thinking out of the box – how about some giant golden arches on the roof? Particularly if we can find some giant corporation somewhere who uses golden arches as a design/architectural motif to foot the bill.
Actually, from what I read it is almost impossible to recreate the roof as the medieval builders constructed it, so I’m really not opposed to other ideas. Trying to recreate a part of a building that lasted for centuries has kind of a Disneyland feel to it – it’s not the real thing, and it will never be the real thing.
Whatever you do, don’t use the contractor that started the fire.
I think a roof aquarium would be a real attraction. Imagine it lit from below at night, the image of sharks and stingrays gliding over the Seine, Magnificent!
…Surprised they didn’t play this while it was burning…

I think it could be rebuilt to original specs using modern material.
In place of the trees/lumber, use rebar-encased extruded Trex, make to any shape, length, and strength needed.
If they put minarets or a glass roof on Notre Dame, I will bomb it myself. They could just save time, finish destroying it, and let the muslims build a mosque there. You know it’s coming. It’s what they do.
Use the Original dimensions and rebuild it with modern materials use laminated oak beams since there aren’t any trees big enough. As long as it looks original from the floor of the cathedral it will be OK with me. Include halon or other modern firefighting techniques in the re-construction of the roof In addition to computerized temperature monitoring of the whole building would be a very good idea. NO Steel NO glass and NO GODDAMN MINARETS.

I don’t really care for the French, as a people. I find them…annoying. -Frank Barone.
That goes double for French Architects. -me
Like the twin towers ever afforded anything to the US except for a couple hundred greedy bastards that were informed not be on-time that day.

Concrete-wood,

@Sabre22- Exactly…white oak in those sizes may not be readily available. That said, the engineers will overdo the design specs forgetting the original craftsman likely knew more about wood structure than them. Look at the clear span Shaker Village Meeting Hall In Kentucky…modern engineers say the upside down roof truss should not work…but it does and a 100+ years later the ceiling and roofline are both perfect.
Hopefully Notre Dame’s restoration design will replicate the original, especially the Spire….as long as the architects and politicians stay out of it.
