Sam Grisak of Great Falls, 15 years old, caught a new state record golden shiner on July 3, 2022, in Giant Springs Pond in Giant Springs State Park.
Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks said in a news release that Grisak’s fish weighed .03 pounds and measured 4.41 inches, had a girth of 2.6 inches, and was caught on a dry fly. More
Must have known it was a monster by the tremendous bend of the fishing pole.
Probably fought that thing for seconds, perhaps half a minute even.
Used to fish for bait fish in local streams using tiny hooks and small worm pieces. Didn’t know anyone kept track of sizes but a record is a record!
Good thing he had 80lb line.
I don’t know, something seems a little fishy here.
I thought the article was referencing Lightfoot when it talked about a bait fish
Will be heading up to the cottage tomorrow,Parry Sound area.
Two weeks of fishing and debauchery.
But to be quite honest i trap minnows in the creek on our property as large as that.
Cue the master baiter jokes in 3-2-…
I’ll never put on another life jacket.
I’d have it mounted on a saltine.
When my son was little I had to clean fish not much bigger than that. Couldn’t just throw’em back. Bullheads, so of course they swallow the hook.
I like the cagey look on the kid’s face like he knows he’s going to catch some razzing in school this fall.
^^^^^dr tar
I’m believing……he…..
researched the record book……
knew where to find just one…..
caught it and viola….state record……
cagey look…..even devious.

Thread winner!
No lie, I was in Columbus Ohio about twelve years ago and passed a van on the outer belt that had in huge writing “MASTER BAITER” with pictures of various fishing baits around it.
Can you imagine him telling his fish tale (aka lie) about his catch to his friends and family? Instead of stretching his arms three apart to describe it, he holds his thumb and fore finger three inches apart.
^^^^edit^^^^stretching his arms three FEET apart…
Imagine holding the “master bait” world record. That’s a lot of hard tugs and even harder pulls on your rod.
When I was 10 the guy across the street would pay me to catch crawdads for him in the local creek. Some of the big ones liked to fight back!
Catching shiners is tricky. Buddies and I used to see who could catch the smallest fish. Use VERY small hooks (the smallest) and let them eat it. Laying on the dock looking down the piling and watching them helps, too. Fun times.
