Larry King, Silenced Forever At 87

Associated Press

Larry King, the suspenders-sporting everyman whose broadcast interviews with world leaders, movie stars and ordinary Joes helped define American conversation for a half-century, died Saturday. He was 87.

King died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Ora Media, the studio and network he co-founded, tweeted. No cause of death was given, but CNN reported Jan. 2 that King had been hospitalized for more than a week with COVID-19.

A longtime nationally syndicated radio host, from 1985 through 2010 he was a nightly fixture on CNN, where he won many honors, including two Peabody awards. More

  1. I used to get his local radio show on WIOD in Miami back in the 70’s. He was argumentative, confrontational, loud, and downright nasty to his callers. I could take only a couple minutes of him. I couldn’t believe it when he got called up to the major leagues.

  2. I never thought much of him. However, I saw him live several years ago where he did about an hour long presentation at a seminar I went to. I couldn’t have been more surprised or impressed with how entertaining he was. RIP Mr. King.

  3. Sorry to hear of his passing. He was probably one of the worst interviewers ever. Which, of course, made him a hero of the left because a liberal could go on his show and get pitched softballs with no follow-ups. He once famously challenged Bob Costas to an interviewer duel with laughable results.
The challenge was to interview someone cold with no prep at all. King would choose Costas’ subject and not tell him who it was until the moment of airtime and vis-versa.
King, being a lousy interviewer, was only concerned with impressing the audience with his liberal credentials so he surprised Costas with Mario Cuomo, the smug and arrogant father of Andrew. But, since Cuomo was the well known governor of New York, Costas conducted a great spontaneous interview with him.
Then, it was Costas’ turn to surprise King. I’ll never forget King’s face when Costas brought out Meatloaf for King to interview. King had no idea who Meatloaf was and ended up struggling and asking fascinating questions like, “What’s your favorite color?”
Of course, I already knew that King was a “great interviewer” like Michelle Obama was a “great beauty” but it was nice to see it confirmed on TV.
Again, sorry to hear of his passing. Nothing personal, I just can’t stand to see some people made out to be brilliant icons when they’re not.
