Law Graduate Sues Former School after Failing to Find Job as a Lawyer

law student sues law school

OC: Despite having graduated from Thomas Jefferson School of Law, in the top tier of her class, in 2008, Anna Alaburda still hasn’t been able to find work as a lawyer. The disgruntled 37-year-old is now blaming her alma mater for the unfortunate situation, claiming that the school manipulated the employment statistics of its graduates in a bid to lure students. She’s suing them, hoping to recover the $170,000 she still owes in student loans.  MORE

  1. I was discussing this with a bunch of friends a week or so ago – those who graduated around 2008, particularly with law degrees, who were unable to transition immediately to a job because none were available. And now that they are hiring, firms want new grads rather than those who have just been idling for a few years. It sucks. Bad timing.
I did similarly, got a Masters in Aerospace in 1991. It’s filed away somewhere, never used.

  2. Her legal training must not have covered that whole, “you don’t have a case” part. Law school is a simple transaction. in exchange for her money, the school lets her sit in their classrooms. Then they will provide a certificate to attest that she did indeed sit in the classrooms. There is no guarantee of claim that it will lead to a job. There is way too much outside the influence of the school in that.

Fat, ugly student = fewer opportunities.
    Stupid student = fewer opportunities.
    Bad economy = fewer opportunities,
Student who overprices herself = fewer opportunities.
Student who specializes in suing her own employer = fewer opportunities.
Student who refuses jobs that are “beneath” her = fewer opportunities.

  3. Several years ago, I asked a lawyer acquaintance of mine what was the current opportunity situation for recent law school grads.
He told me that management positions were open – in fact he knew of the recent law school grad who obtained such a management position – he’s managing the fresh fruit & vegetable department at the local Kroger store.

  4. what is to prevent her from hanging her own shingle?
my father opened up his own practice at age 38 with four children and a wife to clothe/feed.

i understand that defense attorney has established this was the ONLY law school to accept her. lucky them.

  5. with any one else I would side with the school but here we are talking about lawyers and law schools.
the lowest form of life next to politician. often the same thing.
now all I want is to eat my cold spaghetti and watch two liberal factions eat each other!
    this should be televised!

  6. @Mr. Mxyzptlk, the nearest Sam’s Club has an assistant manager who is a lawyer. She couldn’t afford to keep an office open, pay 1 staff person and pay for various insurances including malpractice. She makes more money at Sam’s to pay off her massive student debt getting that fancy useless degree.

  7. The scam is huge amount of money money the gov’t provides in non-dischargeable student loans for government accredited bogus majors. Gender studies? Peace studies? Where are the company recruiters begging for these folks?

Only loans gov’t makes money on is $1.3 trillion in student debt – much of it from students with no hope of finding a job in the major the government gladly supported. Gov’t forgives bank’s bad loan decisions but only debt not dischargeable in bankruptcy is one an 18 year old was conned into. (Yes, yes, parents should have been smarter but this is OUR government making the rules)

If banks gave loans, they’d look at earning potential to pay it back – – – like in the old days – – – and these bogus degrees would be discredited.

  8. Over at Instapundit, Glenn Reynolds has been writing about the glut of law grads for a few years now. There are lots of suits going on for misrepresentation of employment and pay. Law school enrollment is down drastically, so there is an upside to the whole thing.

  9. America –
    5% of the World’s population
    95% of the World’s lawyers.

They’re like aphids, heart-worms, feral ghetto dwellers, and other assorted parasites …
    they eventually kill their host.

  10. No one wants to hire anyone who is sue crazy. She is not hireable. On a dime she’d sue for sexual discrimination. She’ll make it a life time of suing. I worked in human resources for a large corporation and we had one of those working for us. He finally sued, they paid him to leave and he went on to work and sue another company. He was black and gay.

goldenfoxx – I’m white and straight. Can I go to work for a Black and Gay company and sue the hell out of them?

I could file a lawsuit as a Precious Snowflake and say they violated my Safe Space by calling me “cracker” and “vagina boy”

I suppose you can sue your employer. Maybe you can sue for being white and straight. If it works for blacks who are gay maybe it will work for you. We were the second company hit by this guy, he got $30,000 to go away. He then went to work for a major computer company. He was there for 3 years, just enough to start making accusations. Funny thing about it, his name was Reggie. Doesn’t Obama have a friend named Reggie?
