Let’s End This Pointless War in Afghanistan Now

American Thinker-

Our eighth round of talks with the Taliban, concerning terms for a U. S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, has concluded without agreement.  We can’t agree on a timetable (we want two and a half years; the Taliban want us out within nine months).  We can’t agree on a ceasefire (we say now; they say not until our deal is finalized).  We can’t agree on how to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorists (actually, we can’t even agree on the definition of “terrorist”).

The good news is that we are “inching closer” to a “draft agreement,” according to experienced foreign policy experts.

Who are these experts, and what do they know about Afghanistan?  Have they talked to the British?  The British negotiated with the Afghanis in the 19th century, and their tale is hair-raising. more

  1. I agree. Nineteen years, twenty thousand wounded warriors!
“The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane,” and “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.”
For the love of God, bring our warriors home.

  2. Leave now. Instead of Americans dying they can go back to killing each other, like they were doing before we got there. Use the savings to pay off our debt, build the wall.

  3. The Afghans have been playing the Game of Guerilla Warfare for centuries, and they’re better at it than anyone else. You could almost say it’s what they live for. If we are not willing to kill every last one of them to stop it, I say we declare victory, cut our losses, and go home.

“When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An’ go to your Gawd like a soldier.”

Rudyard Kipling, “The Young British Soldier”

P.S. – @Lowell: I believe the Green Zone is actually in Iraq.

  4. After 9/11, the Afghans harbored Al Queda and Bin Laden. We made demands that this stop, and when the Afghans essentially thumbed their noses at the US, we invaded in order to root out a terrorist and his organization. Personally, I was o.k. with that because it sent a message that nations that harbor and assist terrorists may suffer the consequences.

We should have left then – mission accomplished. But noooo…we needed to engage in nation building. Sure, nation building worked with Germany – after the entire nation was reduced to rubble and we executed the Nazi leadership. Nation building also worked with Japan – after we reduced the nation to rubble and killed the Japanese leadership with the exception of the Emperor, who because a figurehead. But unless one is willing to engage in full scale war and utterly defeat the enemy and eliminate its leadership, nation building does not work as we have proven time and time again.

Parts of Afghanistan are rubble, but have been rubble for decades or centuries. The country is a backward system of tribes who generally dislike each other, but unite when a foreign invader decides to occupy the area. It’s their country, and as far as I’m concerned they are free to be as backward as they want. In America, there is no sentiment along the lines of “Free Afghanistan Now,” or even any backlash from our loopy leftist groups who should be complaining about Afghanistan’s treatment of women and minorities. The average American doesn’t care about that nation, and we should have moved on years ago.

  5. Many historical lies always!! The Taliban had almost eradicated opium, so the US had to go in to re-establish the flow of heroin to the West. CIA asset Bin Laden was funded to go to Afghanistan to create al-queda to harass out the Russians. He died of kidney disease in Fall of 2001. The bin Laden family were oil business partners of the Bush family. The bin Laden family members were secretly flown out of the US by the government the day after 9/11 when ALL aircraft had been grounded. The US heroin market relies on the US Military to keep the supply flowing. Rare earth minerals keep the US there as well. Not so proud of a flag fighting for opium/heroin to feed the drug addicts in our own country.

The Taliban had all but eradicated the opium growers before the US invasion. So why is cheap Afghani heroin flooding into the United States?

  7. We seem to get involved in endless wars that we don’t have the political will to do what it takes to win. Why waste anymore American money, American souls and the mental well being of those who served and returned not quite the same as when they left. If we can’t stomach the actual price tag of winning, don’t sign America up for honorable mention on a bad, half hearted mission.

  8. Why don’t we napalm the poppy fields? Too much money involved? WTF? Why not grow wheat? I mean, fuck it, that’s all they grow over there and all poppies are good for is making heroin. So? WTF? I’m schmart, Fredo do this, Fredo do that, Fredo pick up Guido at the airport. So I come up with a good idea, like napalm the fucking poppies, and you all wantta whack me?
Fogetaboutit! There’s money in that white stuff Pop.

  9. Just like Marijuana we should grow our own opium and piss on the cartels.
If Michener writes about how not a damn thing can be done with that shithole back in the sixties, and the same thing rings true half a century later, its time to quit reinforcing failure
