That gray squirrel is melanistic. It’s not a different subspecies, it just has a slight genetic mutation that causes excessive melanin in the skin/fur.
Wrap a can of Lysol in bacon and leave it in the backyard.
Bears will not be a problem anymore.
Jethro, that is true for the species Sciurus carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel). But not all gray squirrels are that species, i.e. the Fox Squirrel is Sciurus niger and are generally larger.
Growing up in Michigan, I’m partial to the black squirrel, as they are prevalent here. When I lived in Minnesota (32 years), I never saw one.
John Harvey Kellogg brought the black squirrels from China (before they became Communist) to Michigan in 1915 to help control the Red squirrel population in Battle Creek that were major pests.
I learned something new today. Thanks Claudia!
I’m impressed with the biological skills and knowledge here.
never seen a black squirrel, but I have seen what a black bear can do to 5 garbage cans in the back yard the day before I was going to take them to the dump.
There is a community of black squirrels along a remote section of the Neches River in East Texas where we used to canoe. They are very beautiful animals. Here we often refer to gray squirrels as cat squirrels and red squirrels as fox squirrels. We have a very healthy population of each in East Texas and for those who like organic protein, they are delicious when stewed with dumplings.
Squirrels are nutty.
Prove me wrong.
