I wish I had that when I was a kid. I just got thrown into the third seat of a Rambler station wagon.

I can guarantee Dad wasn’t texting while driving…
Drinking a beer, arguing with the wife & threatening the other kids in the back seat without wearing seat belts, yes, but certainly not texting!

Ralph Nader just rolled over in his grave…
*Not sure if he’s dead, don’t care enough to check

That kid will launch like a torpedo in a front end collision.

Accidents, nah it was the extra (interior) Carbon Monoxide that caused the Corvair to be a death trap.

My first memories of being in a car was in a Rambler station wagon, which I had to share with parents and seven siblings.
My father always drove with his window down and the radio turned up high. If he could hear us over that, we got the old, “Don’t make me stop this car!”
Despite that, he loved going on long road trips with the whole family.
The footwell was the preferred spot for sleeping infants and toddlers. I remember arriving home late at night, more than a few times, with gravel stuck to my face.

AC Parker — We were in the same family!
Our vehicle was also a (Nash)Rambler; five kids in the back and one up front on mom’s lap.
The story is told that while bidding my dad and us all ‘good bye’ after Sunday supper, Grandad leaned in, surveyed our sardine can, and quipped, “Well, Paul, you’ve just about screwed yourself out of a place to sit!”. Back then “screw” was a code word of which none of us children knew the meaning.
I don’t think any of us fell asleep in the foot wells, but I do remember a lot of tussling and elbows.
I think, also, that in that era our rural society was not that far removed from the idea that in a large family of children, some were not expected to survive childhood.

I paged “Ralph Nader…pick up Line 3”
Nope, LocoBS, he’s not here (yet).

My Mother would proclaim, “Hold your horses!” then stretch her arm across….

How about the little boot behind the rear seat of a vw bug? Rode there on summer trips until pop got some other vehicle….. I can’t remember!

Cracker, we rode there too. When we rode in our father’s car my parents would drape blankets from the front seats to make the floor in the back a tent. We also rode in “the way back” of the new Datsun station wagon.

We didn’t have a car, I rode with my 9 brothers and sisters and the dogs in the back of the wagon…..

@CrackerFJBbaby & @Beachmom
We had a 1958 VW Beetle. My sister and I would sit in the way back, behind the back seat.
I also spent many miles riding in the back of trucks. I even remember riding in a trailer being towed by my grandma’s 1969 Lincoln Continental.
BTW, first car I bought was a 1962 Corvair.

’52 Studebaker Landcruiser – fucker was a tank, until body cancer got it.
That’s just wrong. Dashboards were designed for infants. The package shelf was for toddlers.

You had a car?
3
Not down South, at least between May and September.
The only thing on the rear window âdeckâ in our cars was a mass of melted crayons.
4
You guys were all lucky. I had to ride on the luggage rack with the dog.

lbs,
And everyone had a cigarette going with their own built in ash tray…
2
You all were lucky I was tied to the bumper with a leash.
I became quite the runner.

My dad had a 59 Austin Healey Sprite (with the bug eyes) with only 2 seats in front, but the trunk was accessible from inside the car so when both seats were occupied I would ride crouched down half in the trunk.

W.B.,
Riding behind the seata in a split window Corvette….riding in the open bed of dad’s pickup down 301, great until the rain started!

âAccidents, nah it was the extra (interior) Carbon Monoxide that caused the Corvair to be a death trap.â
Ever had a CO problem with my 63 corvair, but my 73 VW bus had the potential. With the heater on, blue smoke poured out of the defroster vents, and when we drove thru a puddle, the windows would instantly fog up. Air cooled good times!
Probably no one got hurt. Compare to modern “safe” vehicles driven by lunatics:

I remember riding in one of these – the steering wheel had a squeaker horn.

Sometimes (on deserted back roads) Dad would swerve the car right to left in tandem with me moving my wheel.
That’s just wrong. Dashboards were designed for infants. The package shelf was for toddlers.
