Sent outside of normal earth orbit, IMAGE was a NASA research satellite tasked with recording the magnetosphere as it is buffeted by the Sun’s solar winds. It did the job for five years then went quiet in 2005. Fearing the intrepid explorer was lost forever, NASA ended the mission.
