Lyndon B. Johnson used the CIA, FBI to spy on Sen. Barry Goldwater’s 1964 campaign for president

DC: President Barack Obama is not the first man accused of spying on his party’s political opponents in an election year.

Dr. Lee Edwards sat down with The Daily Caller News Foundation to detail the months he and his colleagues on Sen. Barry Goldwater’s 1964 campaign for president spent under FBI and CIA surveillance ordered by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

  1. LBJ also had an affair with a colored chambermaid at the Capitol and threw her down an elevator shaft and killed her. Had everything covered up with threats of death to the families of the ones who had to clean up behind him, but no one seemed to care then.

  2. Many times the last 4 years Ive said the CIA has never been good for America, and frequently hurts America. The FBI has at best been borderline since J Edgar and at worst hurtful (ie GWB’sMueller). Nothing the last 4 years makes me think otherwise.

  3. This was no secret, just not common knowledge…or, ignored. Nixon used the cia and fbi for his own machinations too.

After the fall of the soviet union, I read a couple of memorable books. One by a former kgb dude named Kalugin; “The First Directorate” about all the programs he/they were involved in and American programs they knew about. The other was a book called “The Wedge” …don’t remember the author, but the book was about the escapades of the fbi and the cia and issues between them during the cold war.
Some topics in both books gave perspective from both sides.
    Very interesting.
Both fbi and cia are suppose to be politically impartial, but are not and never have been.
Gotta stop here, an unmarked van with dark windows just parked outside my place.

  4. …further proof that the Devil never changes his playbook, he just waits till the next generation comes along and plays the same old tricks all over again…

  5. Having a State Secret Police or a Committee for State Security or a People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs or a CHEKA or an Organization for Vigilance and Repression of Anti-Fascism or a National Security Agency of a SAVAK (Organization of National Intelligence and Security of the Nation) begs abuse.

    Every place, every time.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

  6. Lyndon Baines Johnson used the FBI to SPY on Barry Goldwater?? It is hard to believe that the man who brought us welfare, black crime, vietnam, and “guns & butter” would ever do such a thing………..perish the thought……

  7. I’d suggest those who have not read The Conscience of a Conservative by Goldwater. Reading it now, the predictions came true, the principles are timeless and its call to action remains largely unanswered. Even todays’ ADD-addled youth should be able to get through it; it’s a slim volume.

  8. The Democrat Patty’s Lyndon Johnson was also a racist piece of shit. Used the N word often and hated black folks.

Was also corrupt as hell and won his first seat via massive vote rigging.

  9. allowing secret government organizations to conduct secret government operations using secret budgets is not conducive to a free citizens freedom.
    anyone expect any different ?
I have a bridge you may want to look at.

  10. Thirdtwin: the media knew. They just didn’t care.

That reminds me: back in the ‘70’s I had a friend whose father was a high ranking officer in a big city police department. I was talking to my friend on the phone and we heard a noise. I asked, “What was that?”

My friend jokingly replied, “Oh, that’s the FBI.”

We then heard a loud click like someone hung up a phone hard. To say we were a bit shocked was a understatement.
