19 Comments on Maintenance Check of Helicopter Goes A Little Sideways
Perfect example of the meaning of “hoist with his own petard,”.

I don’t think that was a pilot, maybe a mechanic.
At any rate, it was a police helicopter aka Ghetto Bird!
3
Looks to me like a kind of cluttered area, blocked path that may have let her taxi away from being boxed in.
I know but have you ever seen an army chopper pilot on an air force base?
3
Now it really needs some maintenance!

Helicopters are terrifying. Only been on one once. That was once too many.

Love the guy walking out and immediately pulls out his phone: Yeah, it’s me. We ..ah…have a problem over here….
4
I assume he was calling 911
5
Oh dear God, please heal the pilot.

If the guy was a pilot, he did not have any hours in that type of helicopter.

He may have been an airplane pilot.
Notice trouble begins immediately when the tail sinks as he’s trying to take off.
Airplane pilots instinctively pull back to gain altitude.
If you do the same thing in a helicopter you go backwards.

Helicopters have a Jesus nut. It’s the one that holds the top rotors on. If it comes loose, you be meetin’ Jesus.

It doesn’t seem like an experienced pilot at the controls. The pilot had a couple of chances to chop power and set the machine down, but continued until the rear of the skids caught the platform.

Looks like the helicopter was secured to the pad by a cable or chain. Someone should’ve done a walk around first.

I’m afraid of the damn things. Tom Stewart was killed in one, but NTSB said he had his young daughter sitting on his lap in the copilot seat with active controls right in front of her.
Someone sent me this link to Youtube compilation of helicopter crashes a couple weeks ago.
Too many things wrong;
No ground crew?
Strapped to the pallet?
Why such a congested area for a check ride? Cars, trees – no clear space for a hanger queen’s first flight (I speak from first hand experience).
Why didn’t the pilot put it back down at the first sign of trouble?

Back when I was in the Marines there was one year where all military accidental deaths in the year were tied to helicopters.

I thought the second guy was running into the building to get help. He returns with FLUFFY!!! WTH!?!?

There goes close to a $Million, especially if it was all decked out with police equipment. I’ve helped install and configure some of that in Indiana State Police copters and the price tags would make you cringe.
Hope the guy recovers, but he certainly wasn’t a helicopter pilot. They’re a different breed.
Simple:
Unqualified to fly helicopters….
Dynamic rollover….
Broken helicopter in one, easy lesson….
