Brookline passes bylaw banning future use of oil, gas in new buildings

Nov 21, 2019

BROOKLINE, Mass. — A Massachusetts town overwhelmingly voted Wednesday night to ban the future installation of oil and gas pipes in future construction projects as well as in renovations of existing buildings.

The bylaw, which passed the Brookline town meeting with 210 votes in favor and just three opposing, would be the first such prohibition in the state of Massachusetts.

“This warrant article is not the whole answer, but it represents a start” in reaching Brookline’s stated 2050 carbon neutral goal, said Town Meeting member Cornelia van der Ziel.

“When you’re in a hole, the first thing is to stop digging,” State Rep. Tommy Vitolo said; this warrant article takes away the shovel, he added.

This bit of enviro-nitwittery “would require homeowners and developers to use electricity to power all future heat, hot water and other appliances.” Exceptions would be made for “backup generators, restaurant kitchens and medical offices, among other uses”… Expect a run on backup generators at the local Home Depot.

  1. An erg is an erg. The only difference between sources of energy to heat a home is in production loss and transmission loss. Anecdotally, I’d guess that electrical heating has more of both compared to oil production and transport. Electrical infrastructure is also vulnerable to damage by severe weather, (I’m looking at you, PG&E).

Liberals are invariably the people who slept through 9th grade science class. However, this is one instance in which I’m inclined to agree with them: we both think it’s a good idea for them to freeze to death in the dark.

  2. Back again to 1810, they will only be able to heat ny fireplaces. The cost of wood will go up, and the buildings will burn down. They lack adult supervision. I hope they beef up their fire departments.

  3. Massachusetts— snowy and cloudy all winter, and cloudy much of the rest of the seasons besides. Solar panels are useless. Electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels. Guess nobody told all the Mary Sue Birkenstock’s up there.

I actually lived in Brookline one winter while I was in school up Nawth. It was a blue collar working class town made of 1920s frame clapboard duplexes and fourplexes,
built cheaply and uninsulated, with fuel oil furnaces.
    Good luck going all electric.

  4. Electricity.

The Most EXPENSIVE $$$$$ way to HEAT a home period.

Cost of Hydro & Cost of Repairs.

Heat pumps break down much more than standard Air Conditioners

I have been an HVAC technician for 33 years and NATURAL GAS is the cleanest, cheapest, and fastest to repair.

  5. Sooo, these dicks are exporting their carbon usage to another state or country? Hell, if they were serious they’d make part of the law forcing the extra electricity to be made inside Massachusetts and not outside purchases or re-routing of power from another districts forcing them to export the carbon usage. I wonder what the population will do when their heating/cooling costs go through the roof and businesses start to close up.

  6. When i was a youngster i rented an electric heated house. Very dry air. Ontario Canada pushed electric heat decades ago and the houses were built with no room for forced air ducting so they are difficult to sell much like boiler hot water heated homes.

  7. Sorry there mister home seller, but I only qualify for a 2 grand a month house payment. Because of the projected cost of electricity I can only offer you 60 percent of your asking price. Sucks to be a really stupid holier than thou global warming believer dunnut?

  8. The future bite from reality will be vicious and will hurt a lot.

But on the bright side. Sometiimes when reality bites hard it creates new brain cells and wisdom. Except in people who are really dedicated & determined to be fools. With 98.6% voting to approve this nonsense my bet is most of them are in the “determined to be fools” group. Nothing will be learned.
