Meanwhile, in Belgium: F-16 accidentally destroyed by mechanic

Not since the days of the Invasion of France in 1940 has a Belgium military aircraft been destroyed while sitting peacefully at its airbase. That all changed Friday when a service technician working on another fighter plane happened to trigger the six-barrel Vulcan 20mm cannon on another aircraft. More

  1. I was going to say the same thing and ask if some how John McCain was involved. Having worked on flight lines that technician is an idiot and should be fired immediately and never allowed to be around any aircraft ever again. He put everyone else’s lives in jeopardy because of his complacency and carelessness and destroyed an F-16 as well.

  2. geoff……. 3 planes. This guy has achieved Jerry Lewis like stature amongst idiots.

I bet he raised his head out of the cockpit and let his cigarette fall out of his mouth as he watched the flight line erupt in caddy shack like fireballs.

  3. @Aaron……2 planes, but only if you’re counting damaged aircraft too (one completely destroyed, one damaged). If you’re just counting destroyed, then Geoff is right.

  4. @PJ — haah! You beat me to it! It’s looking, today, like just about everyone is a Trumplican operative. We don’t need paid operatives when we’ve got mechanics like this working for our customers. ….or Madmax Waters, or Liawatha Warren..etc.etc.etc.

(Geoff C. said last night that he kinda wishes there was more time left before the midterms just to watch what else happens (to the D’s).)

  5. It’s almost impossible to do this alone…Unless He used homemade

overrides….There’s a Microswitch in the Nose wheel Bay that has to

be pressed to indicate the the Landing Gear is up and locked.

In the late 70’s or early 80’s something similar happened with an

F4D Phantom at Kunsan AB Korea…Except it killed a lot of People

So many mistakes were made..Including having the Weapons Van

directly in front of the A/C …When I got there in 83 they had

pictures of the carnage on Our Break Room Walls as a constant

    reminder.

  6. Meanwhile in Fla. Michael plus failure to fly aircraft to a safe location has caused even more damage.

“.. The actual number of damaged Raptors is yet unknown, and may be kept under wraps for reasons of national security, but some reports are suggesting as many as 21 of the F-22s were left on base to ride out the storm. That number is based on Tyndall’s fleet of 54 Raptors, of which only 33 were said to be evacuated before the storm hit…”

  7. A friend was a USAF A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog) mechanic in Kuwait during the first Iraq war. I seem to recall him telling me on more than one occasion he saw the GAU-8 cannon self fire during heavy rain while the aircraft were parked and the weapon loaded. Luckily no one was in front and killed or injured. However, some hangars and equipment inside took some heavy damage.

  8. WTF is that thing doing in the hangar with a loaded Vulcan? Unless the tech was an Armour working on the weapon feeding system, there’s no way that jet should have rolled in with the cannon loaded.
