Melbourne Ditches E-Scooters

Barron’s

Melbourne has become the latest city to ban rental e-scooters, abruptly moving to end a trial contract with two firms after a community revolt.

After a six-to-four council vote late Tuesday, city authorities said they would give operators Lime and Neuron 30 days to rid the city centre of the two-wheeled contraptions.

Mayor Nicholas Reece — a former executive at the men’s health charity Movember — backed the move and said it had popular support.

He alleged scooters had been scattered around the city “like confetti”, posing a risk to the community. More

According to the BBC, the e-scooters have caused an uptick in injuries and hospital visits, which leaves the city facing possible liable. Here

  1. Oh, c’mon. Leave the scooters alone for a little while longer. Let the morons who ride too fast, in traffic, without helmets, and while fondling their phones weed themselves out a bit more. We’ll all be better off without them. It will improve the gene pool.

  2. San Antonio had them. You couldn’t walk around downtown without tripping over them. They’d be piled up outside hotel entrances. People started tossing them into the San Antonio River along the Riverwalk.

  4. Wow, what a different world it was when we used to rent a Honda 50 and cruise around the county for a couple hours. Probably around ’63 or so. I don’t know about the ‘E-scooters’ but we had to pay for it.

  5. Those damn things are thick around here. I’ve seen at least 15 12 and under kids almost get killed on them. I almost got what I swear was about a 7 year old little girl on one. She’s on the sidewalk and I approaching from behind. NO NOT LIKE JOE BIDEN. Anyway she keeps looking over her shoulder to the left and sure as shit jumped the curb a cut right in front of me. If I wasn’t off the throttle and cover the brake she’d be dead. Those things haul ass. They need an age restriction on them.

  6. THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS

Have you been to VERY crowded areas like China, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia? The streets aren’t jam-packed with eScooters, they are stuffed with actual motorcycle-type scooters. Without helmets! Families ride on them with little kids, without helmets! There are no traffic laws that they obey, they are lined up on the sidewalk like cord wood, they even drive them on sidewalks. Yet, no one is proposing to ban scooters.

Here in the West, people can’t ride them properly without getting brain damage, can’t avoid hitting pedestrians, can’t park them responsibly, speed where they shouldn’t be speeding, so they are banned.

I love these scooters. There is about a 2 mile stretch from my home to the bus stop so I can get to work. I have to WALK that both ways now. Do I dare ride my bike, leave it chained up and expect it to be there when I get back from work? No, it will be stolen. I take my backpack, use the scooters to pop in at the super market, scoot home. Easy, nice and clean, no obligation to charge it up or store it anywhere, no anymore. Where I live, they have pulled out too.

    Thanks losers!
