Millennial Saint – IOTW Report

Millennial Saint

The first millennial saint is about to be canonized–Carlo Acutis. The adolescent passed away in 2006 at the age of 15 from leukemia, and Pope Francis reportedly recognized a second miracle associated with him on Thursday. The first miracle ascribed to Acutis—the healing of a Brazilian boy with congenital pancreatic disease—led to his beatification in 2020. A second miracle involved a college student from Florida who was likewise cured after suffering a brain hemorrhage as a result of a head trauma. No date has been established for Acutis’ canonization as of yet.

  1. Unfortunately the process of recognizing sainthood has been politicized as well.

John Paul reformed the sainthood process in 1983, making it faster, simpler, and cheaper. The office of “Devil’s advocate” – an official whose job was to try to knock down the case for sainthood – was eliminated, and the required number of miracles was dropped.

The idea was to lift up contemporary role models of holiness in order to convince a jaded secular world that sanctity is alive in the here and now.

  2. Saints are just role models, examples of people who managed to attain holiness in this world full of complications and temptations.

This young fellow saw the possibility of using the internet as a tool for evangelization, which makes him an appropriate saint for our time. In the age of Mark Zuckerberg, we can aspire to be like Carlo Acutis.
