Millennials Hating on “Monopoly” Redesigned For Them

Seeking to keep one of its board game franchises fresh and relevant for the next generation, Hasbro redesigned “Monopoly” just for those who came of age at the turn of the century, the Millennials.

Instead of buying and renting out properties at inflated rates to bankrupt the other players, in this version the opponents compete to have the most “experiences.” Apparently the thinking at Hasbro is that today’s young adults can’t afford a mortgage anyway and they are more interested in outdoing each other in their unique adventures.

Many in the age demographic aren’t amused by the implication that their generation can’t (or won’t) achieve the traditional standards of success. More

  1. lol. I imagine a board with a oxygen bars and safe spaces. Of course, these “experiences” from a game board might be the closest a lot of them ever get to getting out of a chair.

  2. Every generation has its challenges. BBy boomers suffered through the S&L crises, the tech industry collapse, 18% mortgage rates, gas lines, the Vietnam war, etc. Millenials. WHO WILL PAY FOR THE FREE HEALTHCARE AND COLLEGE, ETC. grow up please.

  3. Sure, the baby boomers screwed the pooch, and now you Millennials are paying the price. When you over regulate the housing market, raise property taxes, and throw in some rent control, housing prices and rent go up. When you discourage business development, and particularly small business development, jobs are harder to come by. When you raise taxes, you have less money to spend. We even jacked up the cost of higher education so that (a) you can’t afford it, and (b) you can’t get a good enough job to pay back your student loans anyway.

So what is your generation going to do about it? Right now, with your support of left wing Democrats, avowed socialists and Bernie Sanders, you aren’t doing much except tossing gasoline on the fire. The Orange Bad Man pushed through tax cuts, is trying to curb illegal immigration, trying to bring manufacturing back to the US and easing regulation – all of which help the economic situation for American citizens – and you want him impeached.

Our greatest trick is letting left wingers take over our education system and teach you that what we baby boomers have done is actually good and we should fuck up even more things. The only mistake we made is that eventually, these things catch up in the real world and we haven’t figured out how to blame you instead of the baby boomer generation, but based on your continued support for left wing politics this isn’t really much of a problem.

So enjoy Millennial Monopoly, because the real world you think you want will suck even worse.

  4. It’s hard to make the underlying concept of Monopoly work with this model. A piece of property, or a house, or a hotel can have only one owner (in the original game), thus it is possible to amass assets until the player has a monopoly on what the other players are competing for.

With experiences, there’s no ownership, everybody can have the same experiences, and so there’s no conceivable way for one player to monopolize the assets.

Unless we introduce the ideas of identity politics and racism, and disallow cultural appropriation. Then each player can identify as a member of a protected class, and the classes obviously compose a hierarchy (black higher than brown higher than asian and white always at the bottom). Then, as competition for experiences progresses, once a player achieves one, no other player can appropriate it. Except, of course, that everybody else can appropriate the white player’s experiences, thus ensuring that white loses and everybody else gets a participation trophy.

  5. “a monopoly game based on BOWARD County would be interesting”

Might just need to have a whole side dedicated to “jail’ instead of just one corner. And no ‘get out of jail free’ cards.
