Mmmm Pi… – IOTW Report

Mmmm Pi…

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

  1. YOU DEPLORABLE RACIST, MISOGYNIST, ISTS! The “ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter” IS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT! ONLY USED TO OPPRESS PEOPLE WHO WON’T BOW TO YOUR WHITE PATRIARCHY MATHISM!

  2. It’s an amazing irrational transcendental , like all other transcendental numbers such as e or the Fibonacci sequence numbers or the golden number Phi. All the works of Shakespeare, the Holy Bible in every language, everything everyone ever thought of is encoded into any of the transcendental numbers – because of infinitely long permutations of digits. They truly transcend though and space time. This why I’m a Mathematician. It’s truly mind boggling when you try and wrap your head around it. 1/89 encodes the Fibonacci sequence and is a rational transcendental obviously.

  3. @TN Phil: “transcendental number”. Is that anything like the nitrous oxide the Buddhist monk refused when having a tooth pulled, because he wanted to transcend dental medication?

    🙂

  4. Pi always sounds like the number you have to multiply by when there are Dems in office to discover how much they want to multiple your “obligation” by at tax time. Nuthin sweet about it. It just keeps on goin forever.
