Montana Gov. ends same-day voter registration

Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte signed a bill that put an end to same-day voter registration and that requires some residents to provide two forms of identification before voting. And now Democrats are suing.

“This afternoon, Montana’s Republican Governor signed two voter suppression bills into law. Tonight, on behalf of the @MTDems we sued,” election attorney Marc Elias said in a tweet.

Dems began to raise a fuss after Gianforte signed House Bill 176 to end same-day voter registration, and Senate Bill 169, revising the accepted IDs that can be used for voting.

Voter access and ease has become a hot topic that has created more division among the parties, with Republican sponsors of the Montana bills “arguing that the bills aren’t about making it harder for voters, but making the state’s election system even more secure and efficient,” CNN wrote. 1. I fail to understand the necessity for same day registration, it isn’t as if they are having surprise no notice elections that catch the unregistered people unawares at the last moment.

  2. It’s a blessing that Gianforte won. Had Cooney won, I can see him weeping hysterically about further oppression of “heroic minority voters” by evil white Montanans as he vetoed those bills. He’d have to one up his predecessor, l’il Stevie Bollocks, who vetoed a bill that would have forbidden the institution of sharia law in MT, while virtuously saying “That’s NOT who we are!”. Yeah! Whatever…

  3. They make you wait to buy a gun, then you can wait to register to vote.

It’s like those people weren’t warned far enough ahead that Christmas is on Dec 25th.
Or the ones that rush into Walmart the day before school starts to buy paper and are livid there’s nothing left.
Weren’t you grocery shopping there every other day for the past 2 months???
