18 wins in the last month. They go from 4 games over .500, to 13 games over .500 in a 29 game stretch.
Mets will play a wildcard game Wednesday night at Citi Field.
That is all.

Is this little league?
F the Mets
Wanna go back to 2 leagues where half the country stops watching in July because there is no divisional play, and the Yankees win every year because they have the most money?
Well, Whaddya know? It’s 1986 again!
I could use some youthful optimism in my worldview these days.
I think it’s soccer
Mets scored more runs in September than any other team in the national league. If they can get some miracle pitching their offense, for a change, can carry them.
Because they played the Phillies so often.
Fur, I hear you, but this expanded playoff format is too much.
At the MLB website there’s an article by Anthony Castrovince explaining postseason seeds and tiebreakers. I read the whole thing, and now ny head hurts.
Prior to 1967, the leading team in each league, American and National, played each other in the world series.
Often that meant that teams in 3rd place were out of it early.
It sucked.
Then they had 2 divisions, so those teams in 3rd were possibly in first. A little more interesting.
Now they have 3 divisions. More teams stay “alive” and more people watch with interest.
I’m not sure why that is a bad thing. The leaders in every division go to the playoffs, and the two teams with the best records, after the division leaders, play a one game playoff to determine who gets to be the fourth team in the divisional playoffs.
So, instead of 2 teams competing for the National League championship you have 4.
The point of baseball is to entertain people.
If more people get to be entertained and revenue is created, how is that bad?
Yes, there is a point where too many teams “get in”.
I don’t think we are at that point.
What is needed are more teams so they can have 4 divisions in each league.
The one game playoff is stupid.
The leagues are only responding to what the market wants.
They aren’t stupid.
They are capitalists.
I like having a lot of teams in the hunt, it’s fun to watch. One thing I would like to see changed is the one game wildcard play-in. It should be easy enough to have it be best of three.
1986 redux? We have a better fielding 1st baseman this time.
Good luck Mets, better luck Red Sox!
The Rockies came to Denver in 93-I bought season tickets-Coors Field is beautiful, like an updated Wrigley(where I watched several hundred games)
Players went on strike in 94 and that was it for me. My warehouses were a few blocks away and even when they were in the World series in 07, I was unfazed.
Marshall kneeing in the Bronco opener pretty much killed the NFL for me. I know Elway is fucking seething but him keeping quiet sealed the deal. Glad you can still enjoy BB Fur but those days are over. Maybe you’ll feel different when you’re my age and the time left is a whole lot less and the league is even more PC.
For the present, I still love tennis, but bet your ass, some dick will fuck that pleasure up too. Serena is my pick for the one that’ll pull some racial horseshit like she’s done before.
I wouldn’t say I was a big spectator of sports.
I follow the Mets. That’s it.
I haven’t watched the Jets since they signed Michael Vick. I was serious when I said that signing that dog killer was it for me.
I haven’t watched one game this year because of the anthem horseshit.
The NFL is dead to me.
I don’t care about it.
I watch a few golf tournaments.
Other than that I prefer to play sports than watch.
Hey Hat, even if no one else is excited for us, Let’s Go Mets!
And Hat, a fourth division in each league would be disastrous–there isn’t enough good pitching as it is, and Big Sexy is an anomaly at the young age of 43.
But then again, when the leagues expanded and realigned a decade or so ago there wasn’t enough pitching then, but the gap was eventually overcome.
My beef is that baseball isn’t a cold weather sport and having playoff games snowed out (remember ’79 and the snow in Baltimore?) or players tempting frostbite in November is insanity. Shorten the season by one week (or 8 games), do not expand the playoff format, and let MLB conclude its business before November 1.
What do you think, Fur? It’s the 30th anniversary of the ’86 World Series. Repeat of the Mets/Red Sox match-up? Lets Go Mets!
the biggest problem w/ the playoff scenario is that it has skewed the Sancta Sanctorum of Baseball forever … just like the DH …. statistics & records now mean nothing … no sense arguing who was the greatest clutch hitter in the post-season, because players today can get in so many more ‘post-season’ games than players from the past … even players as recently as the ’90’s
… how many more seasons could Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle have played if they just DH’ed for their last 10 years? … like a certain player about to retire at the end of this season?
… & the League is a joke when there is only 15 teams in each league, making interleague play necessary at the end of the season … teams should be playing their rivals at the end of the year … not some schlub club from another league.
but, congrats to the Mets … they certainly came back from the dead … Good Luck to ya in the post-season
Back-to-back World Series like the Royals? That would be a lot of fun to watch!!
It was 1069. An afternoon. I was on my way along 23rd Street toward Lexington Avenue. There was a TV store near Lex. with 5 o 6 B&W TVs of various sized showing the ball game. About twenty or so people were gathered on the sidewalk and I joined them.
Suddenly the game was over. The “Amazin’ Mets” won their 1sr World Series.
What joy. The entire crowd burst into applause, shaking hands and back-slapping each other. (No high fivin’ back then) Motorists flashed lights and honked horns, as did the cabbies. (No Fooken mussies either, I’m taklin’ Jewish, Italian, Spanish, and Irish cabbies) A patrol car’s lights came on and its serien (sp) blared;
A fire truck clanged and hooted. What a day! Smack in the middle of the Viet Nam war.
1969 Damnit!
Good for the Mets. The Jays pretty well flushed the last 20 games and 1st place in the east by going on a massive losing streak. They couldn’t beat anyone and now they pretty well have to beat Boston tomorrow to be sure of a wild card spot. It’s been tough on my Lorazapam and Johnny Blue I’ll tell ya.
I fuckin hate high fives and fist bumps
Tommy, it’s okay, we know you remember the 1069 World Series too.
I know you’re a vet–Battle of Hastings (1066), right?
🙂
Yonk, hell no, I wasn’t there in 1066, but I was a War Correspondent in 1016,The Battle of Clontarf, when Brian Boru kicked the shit out of the Danes. The Danes never got over it. Now , today, they are just a bunch of faggots, But the Irish ain’t much better.
