After a historic 20 rounds, eight competitors were named co-champions of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Sixteen kids had advanced to the finals Thursday, pared down from 50 competitors after 5 1/2 hours of competition in Oxon Hill, Md. More
Congratulations to the eight! That’s quite an accomplishment.
I find it odd, though, that the article about the spelling contest failed to include any of the words the kids were asked to spell.
Everyone gets a participation prize! No feelings hurt.
Reminiscent of the best Jason Bateman movie ever;

All home schooled? Usually. They’re the only ones who have any time left over in the week to get ready for competition. The publik skool kids are too busy learning about all the genders and how to choose one.
Wow! they couldn’t come up with seven words some of those kids would find difficult spelling? That is ridiculous (or maybe fity cent).
O.T. I spent some of my formative years in Oxon Hill….. Way back before it went completely to shiite.

Gud fer tham.
Bullshit!
Keep going until there are seven Losers and one Winner!
Good job to all eight, though👍
So this is why we have the H2B visa program? So we can import people who can spell from India. NOW the SJWs will call Indians “black”, right?
onomatopoeia?
I wonder how many were home-schooled, and how many are prisoners of government schools.
No Americans were involved. All foreigners. Sad
I did NOT read the article, but I’m guessing that more than one was named Apu or Virat. Amiright?
I’d normally roll my eyes and declare the organizers where undermining the spirit of competition by not continuing the contest until there was only one champion, but these kids hung on and all performed magnificently and all really did deserve to win.
I just wonder how they’re going to keep the bee going after handing out $50,000 to all eight finishers? Must be some good sponsorships willing to foot the bill.
Minuscule.
I was a spelling champ in my mind until somebody challenged me on that word. It stumps the best of ‘em. Try it out on your favorite Spelling Nazi, and tell ‘em Boehnerdict Ryan sentcha. 😀
OK, I just hit the link and I was right!
Dang, our kids don’t study or learn and the Asian parents ensure their kids do.
I see a problem with that. If we don’t turn this around, and quick, we’re doomed.
I skipped a whole semester of 7th grade spelling and took an extra recess. I still got a passing grade.
Being 7 of the 8 were Indian (one contenstant was a white female), this comment from the webpage featuring the story says is best:
“This shows who studies and who is wasting time with TV and social media.”
supercalifragilisticespialldocious.
Did I get that correct?
Bet they never saw Mary P! The original of course:

So next year:
Will they run out of hard words? How lazy….
Will there be 30 1st Place winners, where everyone gets 50k?
Participation trophy’s are better than they ever were.
Competition is being destroyed – But, maybe that’s the intention………
My mom taught me how to read and spell phonetically, so I became an excellent speller. And I would have won the spelling bee in 6th grade if my best friend hadn’t made me laugh by making goofy faces at me. The consolation was that I lost to the one Japanese girl in my class who was and probably still is a real smart cookie.
