News Says Balcony Collapse is “Difficult To Watch” So They Show it Multiple Times in Slo-Mo

I don’t think it’s difficult to watch. I think it’s difficult to comprehend how these idiots thought a rickety deck would hold dozens of people.

  1. How many times do these things have to happen before people think: “gee, maybe we have to many people on this deck?”

I feel bad for the homeowner, who was lied to by the renters, and then when she told them to leave, they ignored her. She will probably get sued. I don’t have a lot of sympathy for the idiots who stayed.

Jethro: Nothing intrinsically wrong with a cantilever deck, if it is designed correctly. This one may have suffered deterioration from the elements .

  2. These houses were built in the 70s 80s. Right on the ocean. Big Rock is where the rentals are. Party houses.

I stayed in one right there in 92. Never occurred to anyone to stick 30 people on a 12 foot balcony. It seemed kinda’ obvious the house was just match sticks on stilts. Plus…. any damage to the house would have been super expensive for kolledge idiots like us.

I dunno’, every time a balcony collapses it’s got 400 people on it.

Is this a genetic deal? Passed down by survivors of previous collapses?

Sir, that is a great comment you made. You nailed in a few words just how screwy the news media is. News dopes, anchors, reporters, and all their editors, bosses, gofers, office whores, and the entire cabal have no idea how effing stupid they are.

  4. Lived in Florida most of my life.
Decks are basically a cheap wooden porch with no roof.
With moisture and rot over the years, they’re only as strong as the 6×12 header it’s bolted to.
Only for evening drinks and hanging plants.
    Never built to hold tonnage.

  6. You’d think a clue or two might have drawn caution. Floor till, sag or creaking noises. Learn from the mistakes of others because you’ll never live long enough to make them all yourself.

  7. I practiced commercial/residential design for 30 years. Our father taught us to “overbuild” – my house deck (22 inches above grade) has 2 support beams of 2/2×10’s at 8′-0″ on center – deck boards of 2 x 6’s. I live in tornado alley in Saskatchewan – the house will be gone before the deck is.

  8. The owner was “trying for 3 hours” to get the extra people out of her house?! Has Malibu ‘defunded’ their police?

One call to authorities, on the record, whether it’s effective or not, is necessary to CYA. Assuming the renters put up a real deposit and have assets to pursue, it is they who have to worry about any future lawsuits.

But then this being CA, all bets are off.
