Trailblazer was a word used by many to mourn the passing of actor Nichelle Nichols, who died Saturday at age 89. Nichols broke barriers for Black women in Hollywood when she played communications officer Lt. Uhura on the original “Star Trek” television series, and paved the way not just for future television actors of color but astronauts as well. Tributes from fellow actors poured in on social media Sunday. Her “Star Trek” co-star George Takei said he would have more to say soon but that his heart is heavy. Celia Rose Gooding, who plays Uhura on the current “Star Trek” wrote that, “She made room for so many of us. More
Not be a jerk here, but did Uhura ever advance in rank beyond Lt.?
Worse, it seems “Uhura” didn’t officially get a first name until 2009 (after Nichols was no longer cast), it’s “Nyota.” There were apparently two other first names kicked about prior to 2009, “Samara” and “Penda.”- Dr. Tar
And then there was one.

RIP.
She had ONE job. It was stupid, but she did it anyway.
From what I understand she was forever grateful for the role and didn’t use it to go about beating Whitey upside the head for the next 50 years after the role ended.
She was on an episode last night on MeTV showing a whole lotta sexy leg in her outfit while seated at the controls…
Unlike Bill Russell she will be missed.
“Star Trek” co-star George Takei said he would have more to say soon but that his heart is heavy.
Translation: I’ll have my resident lawyer come up with something appropriate…soon.
Rest in Heavenly peace
Been watching a bunch of “Leave it to Beaver” on MeTV since Tony Dow passed.
Simpler and better times indeed.
Civility peaked about that time…sigh
Don’t forget the famous Shatner smooch.
RIP
Enjoyed her work.
Fun character.
She was a solid character in an iconic series.
Not many can say that!
“She’s dead Jim” – Dr. McCoy (Please forgive me, but it’s the first thought that popped in my head.)
Dr. Tar, yes, Uhura had been promoted to Lt Commander in Star Trek:The Motion Picture and held the rank of Commander for STII thru VI.
And while few realize it, Uhura’s first name of Nyota was used in the film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. You have to listen very carefully, but Kirk uses her first name when the crew aboard the Bird of Prey is trying to figure out what the alien probe affecting Earth is signaling.

…she also “chaired seminars at the Academy”, as she says as they walk into the unexpected meeting in ST6 when they are told Kirk is being dispatched.
…I can only imagine hundreds of students in an auditorium chanting “Hailing Frequencies Open” by rote…
One wonders if we would have had flip phones if not for Star Trek.
RIP, Ms. Nichols.
RIP Nichelle Nichols. Always a favorite character, AND a hottie.
“Uhura”, Miss Nichols Star Trek character was an inspiration for me as a kid. I wanted to be as respected, smart, sexy and beautiful. It was never about the color of her skin. Uhura exemplified honor, integity, dedication, passion, intelligence, class and excellence – all the attributes Miss Nichols represented in her life. In God’s mercy, may you rest in peace, Nichelle Nichols. Thank you.
