No, I am not getting paid for this post, but I should!

I thought this was interesting, and I’m always looking for a good deal, and if I find one I like to pass it on to you guys.

EveryPlate Review: See How the Cheapest Meal Kit Service Holds Up in a Test

CNET:

With meals for just $5 a serving, could this meal kit service be too good to be true?

it’s clear that EveryPlate puts an emphasis on hearty comfort food and it comes at an even more comforting price. It’s just $5 per serving, but you can actually get your first few deliveries for just $2 per serving with the sign-up offer. Other meal kit services can cost as much as $13 per serving, so we’re talking a major difference. It turns out the budget-friendly food, while not fancy, is delicious, fresh-tasting and very satisfying.

You pick meal kits from a menu of roughly 13-16 recipes. The meals change weekly with favorites popping back into the rotation often.

EveryPlate is a flat $5 per serving no matter which plan you choose. By my count, it is the cheapest meal kit company available and it’s even cheaper when you bag a special promotion like the one running now (just $2.50 per serving).

What I cooked and how it went

Hoisin pork meatloaves with wasabi mashed potatoes: This was my favorite of the meals I cooked. It was simple to make but interesting and also very satisfying. Putting wasabi in mashed potatoes is definitely my new default.

Sweet potato and pepper quesadilla with fresh salsa and chipotle sour cream: This was a perfect hearty lunch, especially when you feel like you’ve been eating too much meat. The fresh salsa made it for me and I’ll put sour cream on anything.

Spicy umami pork chops with ginger rice and roasted carrots: Another very simple-yet-flavorful dinner. The hoisin and ponzu made good on the promise of umami and the fresh ginger made the rice really pop.

While EveryPlat turns down the gourmet dial just slightly, the meals I tried were all very solid and didn’t look or taste “budget.” At just five bucks a serving, I also felt like I was getting a genuinely great deal, and that’s probably because I was. If you’ve never tried a meal kit before and want to see if it’s a good fit, I would absolutely recommend EveryPlate.

  1. NY prime strip loins at Costco are up to $250 FFS, we cut 9-10 thick steaks out of it, 1 steak is enough for all 4 of us once a week. Taco night, casserole night, crock pot night, leftovers night, BBQ night, ronco chicken night.. That’s a typical meal plan for our family for the week. I’d say we average around $20 or so per night for all 4 of us with all the fixins.

So this box with shipping at $29 for 4 and only around 500 calories per meal with $3 upcharge for meats is still on the expensive side. I’m cheap like that.

Plus in a bind we tear into the MREs, at around 1000+ calories per MRE at $6 a pop is a great value and no cooking.. lol.

Pizza joint went from $12 large pizzas with leftovers to $33 for the same “large” pizza with no more leftovers. shit’s out of control.

We haven’t gone out to a restaurant for dinner as a family in… I can’t even remember the last time. Occasionally we’ll hit up the breakfast joint and the last time it was $60.. outrageous, up from about $35.

We’re doing our st. Patrick’s meal tonight.. corned beef and cabbage baby…. yuuuumm.

  2. The more control I have over what I eat, the better. A box of ingredients from where ever they say they’re from ain’t getting it. I buy my beef in sides from local ranchers. I raise my own chickens with no soy feed. In the growing season, we have a big garden. I’ve been looking around for pastured pork as I’m not going to raise pigs.

Been thinking maybe rabbits as well but my gal and I are slowing planning another move(God I hope my last) so no sense doing that now. We’re going to run a few cows too.

I haven’t eaten out since I left Denver years ago. I do miss the great sushi I’d get there but aside from that(Oh Jesus I’d kill for a blue fin roll up), I’m a very good cook & prefer my cooking. Tonite sirloin steak seared in cast iron with shallots & garlic, prosciutto wrapped asparagus with pesto and a little salad.

  3. Sounds interesting, but spices, spices, spices 🤮 Downfall of western food. I still only use Worcestershire, 57, garlic, onion, salt, pepper.

Stolen election, virus imported from china by Democrats. War in Ukraine is fake. FJB

  4. I could regularly make simple but decent meals at home for $5 per serving or less; no more, unless you’re having hot dogs and Kraft Dinner. Went out for a fish fry last week, it had gone from $15 to $25 for take-out. Even the fast food joints are sky high and there’s been a noticeable decline in the service.

  5. When I was out of town for long periods with work, my wife started getting a weekly Hello Fresh meal box. When I got back home we continued to get it every week. I was always impressed with the quality and the meals were very tasty. We don’t get it delivered anymore but we saved all the recipes and will occasionally make one.

  6. I actually bought a ‘5 Buck Box’ at Taco Bell last week because I was in a hurry and it was handy. A taco, burrito, chalupa, a bag of those crispy cinnamon things for desert and a drink. It wasn’t that bad and served it’s purpose of making the hunger go away. Nothing bad happened afterwards.

  7. “I’m cheap like that.”

    I’d call it wisely frugal.

Don’t be so hard on yourself for being successful at working meal economy.

You might be able to teach classes on it.

Cheap means low price because of low quality, to me. Nothing cheap about what you described.

  8. Good Lord! has anyone actually scrolled down to the ‘my favorite, Meat Loaf’ meal pic??? I mean, c’mon! 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes, Meat Loaf as big as a Slider? & frickin’ Zucchini??? … I wretch at the sight of that crap, let alone eat it! … I’d be gorging on crap chips within 2 hours … “Who delivers Chicken Wings? .. Stat!”

if I want to eat cheap crap, I want to taste crap & at least fill up on it … think about it … Taco Bell has never lied to me, ffs

    no, no, no, no thanks

  9. @Blue Toof ~ this is not about ‘big portions’ … it’s about a meal that doesn’t look like it will fulfill me. If you can be satisfied w/ small portions, then it’s worth the $5 … I’d be hungry in 2 hours

    Just sayin’
