Norm Macdonald – Thinking Man

DW-

Norm Macdonald is probably best known as a comedian, but apparently he’s also a deep-thinking philosopher, intent on explaining the decline and fall of Western civilization to the masses. Only Norm Macdonald does it using Twitter.

Thursday morning, he had a message about the Enlightenment that was at once shocking (because it came from Norm Macdonald) and thought-provoking.

@normmacdonald

The Enlightenment turned us away from truth and toward a darkling weakening horizon, sad and grey to see. The afterglow of Christianity is near gone now, and a stygian silence lurks in wait.

By exposing their own ignorance of the pre-Enlightenment, though, these same critics were proving Macdonald’s point that the move away from spiritual thought and deeper meaning has had a deleterious effect on humanity.

  1. You’re just getting the NPC’s all stirred up, Norm. They’re spooked by all that stuff you’re flying over their little gray heads. If you’re not careful, Vox is going to have to do an Enlightenment Explainer.

  2. Having reread Francis Shaeffer recently I have to agree with the Norm McDonald that the Enlightenment killed Christianity in turning man away from seeing God as the creator of all things to man being the measure of all things. God is not the problem man is into thinking that we can solve all of our problems without God’s help, that’s what’s got us into trouble and the big mess we’re in. When man usurps God’s power and authority he turns it into a living hell every time no matter how good the intentions are where there are no rules except for their perverted ones which lead to death, chaos and destruction of all that is good.

  3. When the christians were tossed to the lions in an attempt to squash the movement it actually resulted in a growth of those wanting to know about Christ.
    As Saul was stoning christians in an attempt to squash the movement it actually resulted in his conversion to Paul and a growth of those wanting to know about Christ.
    And there are many more examples that follow that same pattern.

  4. “The afterglow of Christianity is near gone now, and a stygian silence lurks in wait…..along with some fat chicks.”

    Yes, yes, my small tribute to a comedy legend.
