When I was quite young, we lived with my grandparents for a few months and that happened around Christmas. I am told I was very bad. My Mother filled my hopeful stocking with switches from the chinaberry tree out front of the house. It took me years to figure out that my grandfather, who worked at the railroad yards, had ready access to lumps of coal, and surely must have refused to bring any home for his granddaughter’s stocking.
