Of Course They’re Bernie Sanders Fans

A college instructor, Eileen F. Toplansky, shares some of the assignments produced by her students at American Thinker.

Bernie-Sanders-Meme-1

It demonstrates a disturbing level of incomprehension, lack of effort, inability to think, raw emotion overriding objectivity or logic, and a general failure of our education system.

The junk submitted to this teacher seems disrespectful to the person who actually has to look at it and assess its worth.

  1. This part is entertaining:
‘Whose Schools? OUR Schools! Support for Educators Building Safe Spaces for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Inter-sex, Two-Spirit Native Americans and Gender Non-conforming Youth and their Peers through Pedagogy today.’

  2. In California, “feel good” grade inflation at the high school level has led to a proliferation of honors courses for advanced students, which has led to increased admissions standards for top tier California colleges. Honors courses are graded on a 5.0 scale, while general education courses (which is now called “college prep” in many high schools) are graded on a 4.0 scale. This leads to a situation where at most UC schools, a high school graduate needs more than a 4.0 to be even be considered. In other words, a straight “A” average is not sufficient – applicants for UC schools need more than a straight “A” average.

This is an example of the frequently looney mind set in academia. Grades are given in order to gauge the level of mastery of any given subject, and while the grading system be disheartening at times, inflating grades does nothing other than render the education process meaningless. With grade inflation, no one really knows what level of understanding a student really has, and students have less incentive to try to master subjects in order to get a good grade. This is a lose-lose situation for almost everyone except administrators.

  3. re Wyatt’s comment, I was talking with some high school seniors on Sunday, and some of the private schools in particular are reducing or even eliminating AP classes. Too much focus on college credit instead of actual education.

  4. You guys are pathetic! Are you truly saying that those busting their humps working for minimum wage are supposed to live in poverty, struggling and with no hope in sight!? In the true days of American capitalism, a minimium wage was one that could afford a decent living and corporations were proud that even their lowest tier of workers could live decently. Now a minimum wage is a starvation wage as minimun wage. Corporations now have employees on welfare but are wealthier than ever. How’s that for trickle down economics? People that think like you guys are a joke!

  5. @jj Ss minimum wage is by definition the lowest a person can earn. It is a floor for those new to the workforce, needing experience, unskilled and otherwise not able to generate much value by means of their labor for their employer.

It was never meant to provide “a decent living.” It has always been a scam on those who think all employers have unlimited means to pay their employees more than they contribute to the business.

Creating minimum wages then raising it has the effect of removing the lowest rung on the later for teenagers, part time workers and those in need of an entry level job so they can move up and make more after they have learned what it means to work full time, gained some skills and or knowledge and earned a reference.

Raising minimum wages forces those employers who operate on the thinnest of margins to go out of business and no longer offer those entry level jobs.

But don’t take my word for it, look at Seattle since the city raised its minimum wage.

  6. jj Ss, I haven’t seen you comment here before. As such, you appear to be a drive-by. If there’s a coherent way you can tie together the topic of the article to your thoughts above, I’d like to hear it.

Otherwise, substitute ‘minimum wage’ for ‘illegal immigration’ and you’re appearing to be a first cousin to one of the subjects in the AT piece.

  7. @Left Coast Dan: while I agree there should be a focus on education, UCLA for one requires at least a 4.20 grade point average to be considered for general admission as a freshman. Also, at least in the high school my kids went to, there were honors classes, AP and IB classes – the honors classes normally did not qualify the student for college credit as did the AP and IB classes but were still on a 5.0 grade scale.

But my point is that as high schools inflate grades, many universities inflate their entrance requirements to reflect this. Private schools may be able to get away from this system by virtue of their reputation, but at least in the public school arena where I live, some honors classes are needed to compete for entrance into top tier universities.

  8. If there is such a thing as a 4.2 grade average, what is the top of the scale?

Not trying to be an asshole, but I work in metrology. Scale factors have actual meaning. Has this been discarded in academia?

  9. JJ,

Trickle down economics only works well when the state isn’t involved at all in the mix.

The minimum wage is imposed by the state to coddle the people who are too lazy to better themselves based on old school meritocracy economics.

In the end, the state maintains control of the economic populace of both the motivated and unmotivated individual.

If a dumbass like Bernie Sanders gets elected it’ll suddenly be more beneficial (initially) to go on the government tit to obtain a living, but in doing so the backlash from job creators will pull up the stakes and then there will be no income for the government to redistribute to the government parasites.

Eventually, the government will step in and FORCE people to work either without due compensation or minimal compensation at best (read Revelations in the Bible). And if you refuse to take the mark of the beast, we’ll cut your freakin’ head off.

The state has created an oppressive economic atmosphere that will accelerate worsening conditions beyond the foreseeable future.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Ever.

I can understand how the young people can’t understand how conservative principles based on individual meritocracy are better than socialism or communism. They can’t appreciate the evil slavery that it represents because they’ve never known different.

I, however, know what it used to be like to gain success based on ones own personal motivation and efforts. I was born in 1963.

Things went to shit around 1965, but it wasn’t apparent until about 1973-1976.

Eliminate the left-wing, guilt fostering state and the rest will begin to fix itself.

The alternative is slavery and death on a global scale.

  10. Um, beta male, minimum wage has historically been around $5 per hour, in today’s dollars.

But he, I get it. Your worthless degree and a lifetime of nothing but low level food service to look forward will wear a beta down, no doubt about it.
