By discs, we don’t mean albums, we mean songs.
Give us your personal favorite 10 songs. (And, no, they don’t have to be rock.)
*Also, this is very important, if you’re going to link to songs, pick only ones that you don’t think people will know, and limit it to three. You can’t drop more than three links in any one comment, it will be flagged as spam by our spam filter.
Then don’t call it “Desert Island Disc,” that means a single album you would like to have stranded on an island with no other music available.
It harkens back to a time when albums that weren’t just one or two good songs, the entire album was one you just press play.
Well… Badge, Spoonful, All Along The Watchtower, Layla, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, The Weight, Hypnotized, Oh Well, Spoonful, and Badge.
I have to fit Can’t Find My Way Home in there somewhere, and John Barleycorn Must Die. I think I can do that.
And Red House from Hendrix in the West.
Of course there aren’t three which stand above all the others, there are so many great songs in so many genres. But the three I often name are:
Si Senor the Hairy Grill, by Yello (must play at maximum volume)
The Brazilian, by Genesis (also max volume)
Kathy’s Song, by Simon & Garfunkel (normal volume)
7 more?
Big Noise (from Winnetka) by Kyle Eastwood. I love jazz, and love string bass.
Brothers in Arms, Dire Straits
Cemeteries of London, Coldplay
Tusk, Fleetwood Mac
In the Air Tonight, Phil Collins (the unplugged version from Secret Policeman’s Other Ball)
About a dozen by Led Zeppelin, but let’s go with the Immigrant Song
Probably something by Guns N Roses
Put Your Lights on, by Santana with Everlast.
Oops, I guess it went to eleven. 🙂

Some songs are short so more than ten will fit on a 73 minute disc…
I would definitely have God’s gonna cut you down by Johnny Cash and Why me Lord which is my favorite Kris Kristofferson song. And The God of life CD by John Michael Talbot as well as the Michael Card CD called The Ancient faith which has one of my favorite songs of his called Job Suite, all about the sufferings of Job. And some Irish Music like from Delores Keane, especially her song Solid Ground. I like all kinds of music except for rap, hip hop and soul music from the 70’s. Heck, I’d even throw in John Prine’s debut album from the early 70’s. And lots of Moody Blues just because.
I once put together a list for you guys called “Overlooked Gems”, pegging one or two per year starting in 1968. Never did share it though, as it got pretty long. Some of these ten are from that list; a couple you might know, maybe:
1971 – Moody Blues – The Story in Your Eyes
1972 – Jethro Tull – Look at the Animals
1973 – Steeleye Span – Misty Moisty Morning
1978 – Rush – La Villa Strangiato
1979 – Steve Hackett – Spectral Mornings
1979 – Led Zeppelin – In the Evening
1985 – Clannad – Journey’s at an end
1990 – Spencer Brewer – Gigue
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ktMlQdJKT8
1991 – Capercaillie – Heart of the Highland
1993 – October Project – Return To Me
And for a bonus round —
2005 – Julie Fowlis – Biodh an Deoch Seo ‘n Làimh Mo Rùin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VIoydPBLgU
If I had Julie Fowlis on the desert island with me, I’d gladly skip the disc – she wouldn’t even have to talk to me. Just sing Scottish folk songs to me now and again. I’d need nothing else.
You got As on your report card, but Fs in behavior, isn’ that right LBS?
Uh huh, just sing to you. That’s all.
Heh.
LBS, I had to choose between The Ocean and In the Evening. Glad someone else picked The Ocean. And Geoff likes the Moodies. Both welcome on my island. Maybe not so deserted. But Julie comes first…
I’ve got so many favorites, I’d be hard-pressed to pick the 10 best.
However, I’ve always been partial to this version of Highway to Hell:

😉
BFH…really, I won’t go anywhere near those lovely dimples…
Spiders snakes and a lizards head
If I tell a tale I’ll die till I’m dead
I mean, I wouldn’t push her away, if it was her idea and all.
My taste is all over the map. Right now it’s LaLa Land by Green Velvet in commemoration of our Pole Star at the top of the thread.
But it’s not my favorite overall by far. It’s late.
You nailed it Fur, I forgot we used to get graded on behavior. 🙂
Good times!
Oh, and Abigail, O Holy Night done by anyone is still my favorite song EVER!
Always gives me chills and I wonder how that is even still possible after all these years.

Walking On The Moon – The Police
Also Teddy Kennedy’s favorite since the moon landing allowed the MSM to innocently ignore the fact that he cowardly let a woman die a horrific and painful death in his Oldsmobile Delmont 88 two nights before the historic Eagle landed.
“Kennedy legacy, we have a problem…”
What? No Amazing Grace anywhere? At least try a cut from one of the Merry AxeMas lps with various artists. One of them did Amazing Grace and it was graceful.

The great thing about these posts are finding new music that we were unaware and agreeing with those familiar.
We have common interests yet we are all unique.
That is a beautiful thing.
Another magical transaction is remembering our past.
This post alone brought me back to a wonderful night in the 80’s where I met a special woman.
The song playing, Toto – ‘I Won’t Hold You Back’ will forever be in my heart.
I listened to it tonight for the first time in years.
Tears in my eyes once again…and once again they are a welcome friend.
