Ole Miss’ band will no longer play “Dixie” before football games.
Ole Miss Athletics Department issued a statement saying it was time for the university to create new traditions.
Dixie–a song that was the unofficial anthem of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War–has been a staple of Pride of the South’s lineup for nearly seven decades. Recently the band stopped playing the song during games, but had continued to perform it in The Grove on game days.
The athletic department released the following statement about the change:
“The newly expanded and renovated Vaught-Hemingway Stadium will further highlight our best traditions and create new ones that give the Ole Miss Rebels the best home field advantage in college football. Because the Pride of the South is such a large part of our overall experience and tradition, the Athletics Department asked them to create a new and modern pregame show that does not include Dixie and is more inclusive for all fans.”

What would happen if they just said
Fuck you we are not going to do it.
The fans in the stands will take care of this. The song will be sung with pride and sung very loud.
All to much
I hope you are correct.
The democrats are erasing their horrid racist history one piece at a time.
Already a lot of young people are not aware that the Democrats were the slaveholders political party and that all the people from the past that they are demonizing were Democrats. I had a young black man inform me that it was the Democrats who freed the slaves from southern Republicans, and that those racists still have power over the south today. He is a student at UC Berkeley.
All too Much. I pray you are right.
Next thing they will no longer sing “My Old Kentucky Home” before the Derby.
They’ve already scrubbed Stephen Foster’s lyrics.
It used to be… It’s summer and the darkies are gay.
My how the language has changed.
How about this? We intend to sing “Dixie” before all our sporting events. If this offends you, come after the start of the game, or stay away totally, we could care less what offends your sensibilities.
When I was in high school, I performed to “Dixie” in the talent show.
When I went to college, UGA was one of the first institutions to ban “Dixie”.
Shame on you Ole Miss. You have held out for 40 years and you’re now caving?
This gives me major heartburn. 🙁
Sad, so sad.
Dixie, was a popular song during the Civil War….both sides sang it while going into Battle ( from the book “On Hallowed Ground”)
Ole Miss misdeed. Throw away
your past and you have no life.
The present doesn’t exist without
a past. Anyone who was ever treated
with a “hypnotic” drug for a medical procedure can tell you that.
@extirpates: “…we couldn’t care less…”.
FTFY
🙂
Dixie was a popular song before the Civil War. Back when the North still owned slaves. What is interesting is that there is no reference to slavery in it. Dixie Land was a reference to the area of the South where The Citizens Bank of New Orleans $10 notes circulated at the time (Dix is French for ten). It is perplexing that it is now a racist jingle. I don’t get it but I don’t get any dysfunctional liberal logic.
And the tune Lincoln asked the band to play when he heard of Lee’s surrender was. . .
Donald, your Dimondale speech was right down the Dems smokestack. You will likely be asked your opinion on “Dixie”. Think about your answer now.
Our colleges and university are being run and controlled by commies. Decades ago, the Russians eliminated names from textbooks of other Russian historical nature that fell from grace.
@vietvet. Thank you. People really need to understand the language they speak. I could NOT care less…. Meaning that the issue is of no importance.
It’s a linguistic faux pas like “irregardless” which isn’t a word.
When will this hatred for all things traditional southern stop?
