GP: Oliver Anthony — the singer and songwriter of the hit “Rich Men North of Richmond”– apologized to fans for a show being canceled after he was booked to appear in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the end of the month.
Anthony was angry that the venue, the nightclub Cotton Eyed Joe, was charging $99 for tickets, plus another $199 for a meet-and-greet pass, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
“I had to pull off on the side of the road and make this video. My adrenaline’s pumping. I’m p*ssed off right now,” the singer said in a video posted to Instagram on Monday.
“Don’t buy Cotton Eyed Joe tickets for $99 a piece and sure as hell don’t buy VIP passes for whatever bulls*** price they’re on,” he added.
Anthony explained that a friend of his, who is a plumber by trade, has been filling in as a part-time booking agent for the performer.
“He agreed to this show, I guess, without asking what the ticket prices are,” Anthony said. more
I love this guy he has zero tolerance for greedy pricks.
Speaking of greed, was he really going to get paid $120,000.00 for a one hour performance?
Heseems to me tobevery sincere!

That is peanuts!
Babs got $20 million -$20,000,000 – for a Vegas New Years 90 min. 1.5 hours or $13 mill an hour! over a hundred times his pay!
He was almost “Pro Bono” for stars!
Admittedly more than mosts of us make an hour; but for his line of work NEXT TO NOTHING!
I can’t figure out if he’s a socialist or a captialist. $120,000 for a performance has to be passed on to the consumer. Did he not learn this in math class? People will pay or not, freedom to chose. Only for me but not for thee? Hmmmmm….
The MOST SINCERE MAN IN THE WORLD at this Moment!
I can’t think of a better person right now that CAN”T BE BOUGHT.
Jarhead, I guess I didn’t make a very good point. This club is a relatively small venue and the owner calculated that what he had to charge per ticket in order to make any money. So if Oliver is going to charge $120,000 for a small venue appearance he has to expect the tickets will cost more than $25 apiece.

I’m sure then venue was doing all the advertising. That’s not cheap. Depending on his seating capacity that could drive tickets up quick. I’ve also read the Anthony is netting on average of 40K per day just off YouTube. It’s not like he’s poor. For a small venue those prices don’t seem out of line to me. But hey, I’m in Cali.
Brad, he’s new at the game. He’ll have to learn quick. I’d rather pay a couple hundred bucks to see him play out in the woods someplace.
Moral socialist grandstanding. If people don’t want to pay the price, they simply won’t go. This guy is a moron.
He is not going to get even a dime out of me. I wouldn’t pay a penny to listen to his shit.
I live 17 miles south of that particular cotton eyed joe… Been once or twice over the years. Just a stained floor dive bar that is just not big enough for someone that popular rolling through.
P.S. The guy is not a socialist, he is a farmer lol

Maybe his friend the plumber, part-time booking agent wanted to cash in on his buddies new fame.
Oliver Anthony is like a new horse, everybody wants to ride in their direction, not his.

Let’s hope young Anthony is not going to learn about contractual law real soon

I think some of y’all are missing the gist of what happened. His friend made a show deal and when he found out what they were charging, he got pissed. Quite the opposite of greed.
I think this is a lesson of: when you want something done right, do it yourself.
“I think some of y’all are missing the gist of what happened. His friend made a show deal”
If you’re a bar owner are you going to spend the money on advertisement and promotion with out a contract? Maybe if you were born yesterday. Anthony is a talented guy, no question. But I think he’s sharp as a marble.
Jim nailed it.
At least he hasn’t made the mistake of knowing he’s a singer/songwriter/instrumentalist, and not like actors who think they’re something more than actors.
By the by, I could listen to his instrumental music all day long, but his voice and the way he uses it for most of his songs is kind of a one trick pony to my ears. I wish him all the best — he’s a a kind of Woody Guthrie (obviously, not of the same political ideology) of our time.
I kinda like the guy, but I’m suspicious of another Woody Guthrie.
His populism is a bit open ended, but you have to admit up to this point his refusal to be owned is refreshing.
Anybody that love dogs as much as he does ain’t all bad.
His “I want to Go Home” tore my heart to pieces.
Abigail, great minds think alike, you beat me to the post…
Plumbers don’t come cheap.
