Oregon lawmakers approve landmark minimum wage increase

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon lawmakers have approved landmark legislation that propels the state’s minimum wage for all workers to the highest rank in the U.S., and does so through an unparalleled tiered system based on geography.

The state House of Representatives on Thursday passed Senate Bill 1532, which now heads to Democratic Gov. Kate Brown, who said in a statement she will sign it into law.

“I started this conversation last fall, bringing stakeholders together to craft a workable proposal; one that gives working families the much-needed wage boost they need, and addresses challenges for businesses and rural economies presented by the two impending ballot measures,” Brown said.

  1. I have staff who’ve worked for our company for over 20 years and had been getting pretty decent raises every year. Pretty soon, thanks to the government, they’ll be making minimum wage again. In a few more years of Marxist governments, I will be too.

  2. From what I’ve experienced in New England, the gap between “minimum” wage and regular wages remains constant regardless how high the minimum is and does not do anything to improve the financial lot of those persons at the “minimum” end of the wage scale; rather it stifles job creation, and makes automation of some jobs more cost effective/affordable than hiring, training, and putting-up-with-their-cry-baby-shit humans.

  3. In related news, the price for a gallon of gas raises to $12 and the price of a loaf of bread is now $27. We couldn’t get the current price for a big mac burger, however. Seems no calls were returned because all the burger joints have close – permanently.

  4. Absolute idiocy. And the founders would have them thrown into the stockade if they knew they were gonna destroy freedom by having the government dictate to business how much to pay everyone based on the moronic fundamentals of Marxism.

  5. And all those idiots are going to scream when the prices of EVERYTHING goes up to cover wage increases. The legislature is going to wonder why tax revenue has gone down at the same time the number of government dependents drastically increases. There are no republicans to blame but most Oregon voters will never be able to figure that out.

  6. A whole lot of robots and automated devices are soon going to be fully employed. The millennials, not so much.

Economic morons! How many times do you have to be shown throughout history that price controls, minimum or living wages, and governmental control of an economy fails miserably every time?

Oh wait, it is the very same unAmericans that would vote for a full blown socialist and yet know nothing about the pain and misery that it always brings. I hope they all die penniless and starving since stupidity should hurt.
