KFI:
A jewelry store named ‘Heist Jewelry‘ in Santa Monica lived up to its name Friday afternoon after some thieves attempted to pull off a jewelry heist.
Police say the incident began around 2:35 p.m. when one of the suspects entered the jewelry store with his face covered and used a sledgehammer to smash open one of the display cases. The owner, who was conducting inventory at the time, intervened and pushed the suspect out of the store, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. A second suspect, who was also carrying a hammer, came up to the owner and attempted to hit him with the sledgehammer. At one point during the struggle, the owner of the store managed to take off the suspect’s sweater, who then tried concealing his face.MORE
Less than a mile from my apartment!
Meanwhile a mile away a guy tried to rob an armored truck – with a knife. The guard fired three shots, missing all three. They got the guy (and bag of cash) an hour later.
Owning a jewelry store in or near a ghetto seems unwise.
Dang. I was hoping this would be another “good guy with a gun” story.
Unhappy as the computer here at “work” won’t let me go to “MORE.”
Was in a partnership for a number of years that combined a “Cash For Gold” with the jewelry store. Cased on an ongoing basis, but never attempted to take us down. Believe it was the warm customer service friendly way we presented ourselves with always being armed (openly and concealed) and left mags with nasty looking serrated hollow points in plain sight behind the counters. Hit others near us and believe in one case it was someone who cased us two days before the robbery. The ones they hit were: unarmed, no security or cameras and left one guy alone when they hit them. Very professional as they started a car fire two blocks away in a park for distraction.
Ahh, the good old days when I actually made a few bucks.
@PHenry – this is $5M house territory.
And at least 1.5 miles from the ‘crime train’, aka L.A. Metro Rail. 😉
Possibly the most incompetent thieves this week…
