Ozzy Goes Out on Top

AP

Ozzy Osbourne, the gloomy, demon-invoking lead singer of the pioneering band Black Sabbath who became the throaty, growling voice — and drug-and-alcohol ravaged id — of heavy metal, died Tuesday, just weeks after his farewell show. He was 76.

“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time,” a family statement said. In 2020, he revealed he had Parkinson’s disease after suffering a fall. More

  1. Given how most of these old rockers abused/poisoned their bodies over the years, I am always surprised that any of them get past 65.

I was never an Ozzy fan but loved the era.

I was thinking about this the other day. We all lament the degradation of our culture and its “Slouching Towards Gomorrah” leanings; one clear example is our current music. I grew up with genuine songwriters who told powerful stories, encapsulated in 4-minute melodical rhythms; Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Paul Simon, Phil Collins, and Lennon/McCartney. Is there anything from anyone prominent today who is a true visionary or iconoclast who can transcend generations like these guys?

Speaking of music, I would recommend last year’s Bob Dylan biopic,”A Complete Unknown”. Dylan was a bit before my time, but lately I have been immersing myself in his music. Those duets with Joan Baez in the movie are just magical.

  2. My exposure to heavy metal was seeing Black Sabbath’s performance on the broadcast of the first California Jam in 1974. Been hooked ever since. RIP, Batman.

  3. ^^^ Songwriters/performers:
Dylan (“Desolation Row,” “Hwy 61”, “Lily Rosemary Jack of Hearts”)
    Grateful Dead/Robt Hunter
    Genesis/Peter Gabriel
    Simon and Garfunkel
Peter Green “Green Manaleshi” (Mic drop)

  4. met him in AZ back in 2000, super nice guy, very down to earth. I just saw him at the farewell concert in Birmingham and while he couldn’t stand he still gave us a stellar performance. as they said there at the show, Ozzy is (was) an international treasure. now the world is dimmer with his loss.

  5. Tommy boy….great show, it’s up on youtube. they crushed that performance especially the song “killing yourself to live”. when you listen and red the lyrics they were basically peace and love hippies that thought the only true way to love was thru God yet they get crapped on for being Satanists by the jerkoff media and religious freaks (extremists). musically speaking they cannot be touched

  6. RIP Ozzy Osbourne. I have the Black Sabbath catalog with Ozzy, the two with RJD (who left us too soon), and his solo work. On vinyl. As it should be. An integral part of the soundtrack of my life. I hope he is Saved.

  8. Heavy Metal was not my favorite genre, but looking back on it Ozzy had some good stuff. I look at him as kinda like a piece of art that you wouldn’t have in your house, but certainly should be on display in a museum.
