Package Thief Confronted By Alert Neighbor – YouTube Commenters Sympathetic Towards Thief

The uploader of this video immediately linked a GoFundMe page, which fueled speculation that this video is staged in order to promote an unrelated charity. (The video also ends before the police arrive, which also seems strange.) But, for the purposes of this post it matters little if the video is real or not, because the reactions to it in the comments section are authentic. And there are plenty of people who are against the guy who detains the would-be thief.

They think the guy is too rough on the thief. (Many also object to the guy’s use of the word “faggot.”)

What the hell is going on?

The police are too hard on criminals, the public is too hard on criminals. I highly doubt this pious societal tone is because people are getting more benevolent. Quite the opposite. I think it’s because more and more people are thinking of thievery as a form of social justice. They sympathize with the thief because this is who they are.

  1. This actually happened in Spokane, Wash. (it is for real) the other day probably within 3-5 miles North of where I live up around the Franklin Park and North Town mall area. This is the 1st time I’ve seen this but it’s caused quite a buzz here locally on our local news. I don’t know who was dumber the guy who stole the package or the neighbor with no shoes and no shirt out in the snow and cold confronting the thief, the local cops did arrest the thief though.

  2. Between last night and today I watched a new 10 part series on Netflix, ‘Making A Murderer.’ It’s a gut wrenching story about a small town hick getting caught up in the system where he is accused of a horrible crime, convicted and then un-convicted 18 years later. Only 2 years later to be once again aligned with a horrible crime and is today 10 years later currently trying to once again undue a potentially wrongful conviction.

What struck me as most concerning, the family and the accused are very simple people, like IQ in the 70’s simple. However the prosecutors, cops, judges, etc. all appear to be agenda driven gay rights activists. Not at all a representative cross section of a rural community.

I’ve long thought our law enforcement and judicial system has a lopsided advantage. It is manipulated by people who have no personal connection to unlimited financing of a prosecution, but who at the same time have a personal connection to the outcome of that prosecution. Whereas the accused typically have limited resources and access to information that may potentially exonerate them from the crime. For example, the defense typically has to rely upon the evidence provided by the accuser. The accused are locked up and the scene is secured by the accuser who has nearly unlimited private opportunity to affect the outcome of the evidence.

In the case of this package thief, I agree, some of the commenters are way off base. If you’re caught red handed being a thief, then by golly, you’re a thief! However I also think that some folks siding with the thief are simply reacting to the potential of injustice by judging the individual as a thief even before being formally charged as being a thief.

  3. There’s a new sport around these parts. Fill a UPS or FedX box full of dog shit and put it on your porch. There’s a bunch of movies on FB of theives stealing dog shit.

  4. The Royal Guardsmen bring back some old memories for me. I was in charge of choosing our band for the junior-senior prom in my small high school. Along with my classmates, we chose them and raised around $2000 selling magazine subscriptions. The prize for top salesman was a Snoopy stuffed animal. I gave it to my younger sister.

  5. I would have pressed charges against our barefoot hero for assault, threats of bodily harm, and malicous intent in the face of passivity…. and would have hoped to walk. I think package dude learned his lesson.

  6. Yep, it’s always somebody else’s stuff that’s up for grabs.. That gives me an idea for Bill Kristol’s breakaway party name: The Other Other People’s Money Party.

  7. I get that, but there are those of us who are terrified of the 24 hour news cycle. About 20+ years ago I got my first taste of a media disaster up close, it involved my job, it has only gotten worse.

Now, after 20+ years of growth it has only gotten worse. As a result, there’s a huge incentive for law enforcement, prosecutors, etc., to be swayed by this type of public opinion during the course of investigation. Especially if there is a leak.

I guess what I’m saying is this. There are defenses that need to circumvent geography to pool together an honest jury, due to media coverage. There are however no safeguards present to ensure law enforcement doesn’t carry forward the same prejudices presented by the media.
