Paralyzed suspect used cane to operate car in high-speed chase

VPO: An admitted drug dealer who was paralyzed in 2007 during a police chase led Portsmouth detectives in May on another high-speed pursuit, according to police.

How does a man who has paraplegia manage to drive a rental car with no special apparatus installed? By using a cane to control the gas and brake.

Nathaniel Powell – who court documents say has “recently been involved in a homicide and a separate shooting incident in Portsmouth” – was arrested last week on federal charges relating to the distribution of heroin and the prescription painkiller fentanyl.
