NBC — The Texas woman who inspired the 1958 Buddy Holly song “Peggy Sue” has died at a Lubbock hospital.
Peggy Sue Gerron Rackham of Lubbock died Monday at University Medical Center, according to UMC spokesman Eric Finley. She was 78. The family gave the hospital permission to confirm the death, but asked that no additional information be released, Finley said Tuesday.
Peggy Sue Gerron in 2008 released her autobiography “Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?: A Memoir by Buddy Holly’s Peggy Sue” to mark the 50th anniversary of the song.
Gerron, while promoting her autobiography, said material for the memoir came from about 150 diary entries she made during the time she knew Holly. Gerron was born in Olton, Texas, but moved to Lubbock where she attended high school and met Holly and his friends.
“I wanted to give him (Holly) his voice. It’s my book, my memoirs,” she said about her book, according to a 2008 Associated Press story. “We were very, very good friends. He was probably one of the best friends I ever had.”
She married drummer Jerry Allison, from Holly’s rock ‘n’ roll band The Crickets. The couple later divorced.
So Peggy Sue was real. RIP Peggy Sue.
Sad.
RIP Peggy Sue
This may be somewhat OT, but I think Buddy would approve:

“Peggy Sue”??? And here all these years I thought he was saying “Pegasus”! Dang.
I guess that’s what I get for being so heavy into Greek mythology.
🙂
(Just kidding, Peg. RIP)
The day music died…
Thank You! Peggy Sue and Buddy
Peace…
@ .45-70 You got that right! My parents are buried a couple of hundred yards from the Big Bopper. My mom went to school with him. Said he was a great guy who treated everyone like they were his best friend.
Hambone –
That’s awesome to hear
All the people that make up the memories of our lives are slipping away and the pace is increasing. Such is life.
In 10th grade English all the girls came in crying. Why? At break I asked Bonny why. She said Richie had died in the plane crash. Was So Cal and Valens was a giant star. The week later his Side “B” DONNA was #1; and stayed there for weeks. (for the young uns side A had been a giant hit months before, LA BAMBA. I did own the record; before one of my kids fed it to one of my bird dogs (Everly)
The music did not die that day but it was traumatic for many.
the King lived; as did the #2 seller if the 50’s white buck shoes, which I wore in 10th grade
Nice story.
A lot of those original rockers were good people.
The ones who came afterward were trash and their music reflected that.
@an ol exjarhead: I also was in HS. True fact: The only song I had ever heard by the Big Bopper was “Chantilly Lace”, and based on the sound of his voice in it, I just assumed was a Black guy (“colored” back then, you know). It wasn’t until some time afterward that I actually saw a picture of him and became enlightened.
VET
I went to college with a TKE + a SAE. they had a #1 hit in SoCal “Little Ladin Lupe Lu.” I think it was just a mid sized hit in the East. But I had 2 colored friends who bought tickets to see them. they were mad as He*l! those crackers were white!
The group adopted a name from what a kid from Pendeltonsaid about them “These guys are righteous” (Showing my bias here – admitted!)
The TKE was Black Bart I think in ’64.
Lots of singers pretended to be colored 60 years ago.
The frat guys stage name :”Righteous Bros”. (I was a Greek – again more bias)
@ .45-70 I’m going to order my first .45-70 rifle today. A marlin 1895 Cowboy.
I’m just here for the headline.
There will never NEVER be a better song ever again at 1:35 long…
RIP to both.
The writer, the singer the rock guitar player and the Inspiration…and turns out a movie.
