My mother was a big fan of Como. It’s almost tough to laugh at this out of deference— but it is funny.
An SCTV classic.
(They were much better than SNL.)
What’s not to love about a show that mashes up Midnight Special with Midnight Express?
Or a show that doesn’t do Battle of the Network Stars, they do Battle of the PBS Stars.
And Francisco Franco is still dead.
Misleading title
He died in 2001
And in To Kill a Mockingbird, they never kill a mockingbird.
SCTVs best mashup, IMO opinion, was the Julia Childs (played by John Candy) vs Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood guy in a boxing match.
It’s a good measure of creativity to combine opposite things like that, even if it’s just for laughs.
Canada used to be funny.
@BFH. I don’t much like novels anyway, but TKAM is dumb.
Why did the novelist call the hero Atticus Finch? Why not Atticus Mockingbird? Or call the novel To Kill A Finch. Why didn’t she give the two kids bird’s names, like Hummingbird and Dove?
And the rabid dog he shoots down in the street. A metaphor for southern people by a liberal novelist, I think. Rubbish.
I never met anyone named Atticus. I’ve heard of Attica State Prison in New York. Novelists like to come up with bizarre character names, so we won’t forget how dumb they are.
OK, rant over for tonight.
MrLiberty,
SCTV was funnier than SNL and stayed funny even after SNL stopped being funny.
My wife and I and a couple of friends would stay up every Friday night at midnight and watch SCTV back in the late 70’s and early 80’s before any of us had kids. My favorite was Monster Chiller Horror Theater, a spoof of old horror movies with John Candy as Count Floyd. That and the Great White North with Bob and Doug McKensie. And yes, it was far funnier than SNL. One of my son’s favorite movies growing up was Strange Brew with Bob and Doug McKensie, he laughed his ass off at that one especially with their dog Hoser who drank beer. And Mel Blanc’s voice as the dad yelling at those 2 idiots.
I was waiting for a Biden version of this.
Their dog’s name was either Hoser or Hose Head or something like that. And if the Canucks/cheeseheads say zed for the letter Z why isn’t zoo pronounced zedoo.
LOVED SCTV. One of my favorite bits was the punk band The Queen Haters appearing on the teen show. I remember this Perry Como sketch very well. My mother-in-law was a huge Como fan. She had tickets to his concert and I made her a T-shirt with Como’s face on it. She got to meet him and took a picture with him admiring the shirt.
Loved SCTV. Benny Hill’s satire of American TV was great as well.
^^ the Biden version of this wuz done 35 years ago.
They called it “Weekend At Bernies”.
Don’t forget the Scandinavian polka kings! (the svenge? brothers)
The Last Polka
The Last Polka follows the life, careers, and final concert of Yosh and Stan Shmenge, two brothers from the country of Leutonia who become the biggest polka duo the world has ever seen, presented as a mixture of live concert performances and filmed scenes.
The Shmenges were originally on the television series Second City TV and were also known on SCTV as The Happy Wanderers.
