“My gut reaction when I heard about this was, ‘Would you like to be a sailor deployed on a ship called the USS The Deplorables?’” David Winkler, director of programs at the Naval Historical Foundation, told FoxNews.com. “Do you think someone would really want to say, ‘Look at that ship out there – it’s deplorable?’”

While “USS The Deplorables” may not be cruising through open waters anytime soon, it is not unprecedented for a U.S. Navy ship to be named after someone other than a famous naval officer, president or war hero.

!snip!

I think it would be great, and if I could I’d proudly serve on it.

We embraced the epithet by Hillary and turned it into a battle moniker. We won. Time to name a battleship after We the People.

  1. Of course you know that the USS Clinton would be affectionately known by the sailors as the BJ. USS Deplorable sounds despicable to me. Why can’t they just give it a good name like something that isn’t politically correct? Besides having served on the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 sailors especially when drunk have very affectionate and vulgar nicknames for their ships, believe me on that one. Can you imagine the port of call in any port on a ship named after Clinton? It might go something like this “I hear the BJ is in port, let’s party.” And with the new gay Navy who knows it could be an appropriate but disgusting moniker for a ship.

  2. So I looked up the meaning of the word deplorable and this is what I came up with. Deplorable defined as deserving strong condemnation, synonyms for include Disgraceful, shameful, dishonorable, unworthy, inexcusable, unpardonable, unforgiveable. Also defined as shockingly bad in quality, synonyms for are lamentable, regrettable, unfortunate, wretched, atrocious, awful, terrible, dreadful and last but not least diabolical. it’s no wonder they want to name it the deplorables because words mean things and the word deplorable is not go

  3. The Deplorable is cute but I think it would get old after a while. Now, if they named it the USS Donald J. Trump that would make more sense.

Can’t name it the USS William Jefferson Clinton because the rudder would always be real stiff making the boat hard to steer, and all the sailors would have strange stains on their uniforms.

Can’t name it the USS Barack Houssein Obama because even though it leaves dock with high expectations and making nice sounds, the boat would immediately develop a structural problem making it very limp and spindly with strong tendencies to steer to the left.

  4. Aw, frigate! I would say name it the U.S.S. Wikileaks, except for the “leaks” part. How about the U.S.C.G.C. Hacker? You can bet your Assange that would be the perfect name for a Coast Guard cutter.

    🙂

Whoa dude, take a few deep breaths and reread the post. It is proposed to be USS THE Deplorables as in “The Angry Americans”! A little too abstract for your weak mind away from your safe space?
Interestingly enough, I agree with you about how sailors nicknamed ships to reflect what they thought of them. I remember one or two of my three WestPac cruises in the late ’60s where a number of our online periods were extended because the Shitty Hawk (alt: Shitty Kitty) CV 63 kept breaking down and stayed in Subic. We, USS Bon Homme Richard CVA 31, “The Biggest DECK in WestPac” (self given by a morale officer, NOT A SAILOR–you figure out what we called it) had to stay online to pick up the slack for the Fecal Eagle in their questionable absence. Who needed bar hogs and San Miguel anyway, so long as the Turd Bird got plenty?
Yeah, sailors can hand out pointed nicknames to sackless humps in an eyeblink.

  6. Deplorables has the same appeal as “yankee doodle dandy” which meant to be a cruel insult from the English making fun of the revolutionary soldiers for their uncouth ways. But in the same fashion as the deplorables, the revolutionary soldiers embraced it!
