Phil Donahue, an innovative TV host who rose to fame in the late 1960s after being the first person to interact with a studio audience and bring new ideas into American living rooms, died Sunday, his family said.

He was 88.

The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed, though his family said he’d been suffering from a “long illness.” More

  1. Had Donahue show on in the morning sometimes before work in the 80’s. Taught me some things because at least the guy would ask questions. I distinctly remember the Ragin Cajin explaining how when he graduated college with his poly-sci degree he went with folks of the Democratic persuasion because they were easier to manipulate. Told me all I needed to know about Demoncrats.

  2. I remember Paul Newman coming on and talking about nuclear proliferation. He was well spoken and convincing, which I find amazing when thinking about celebrities today.

    I saw somewhere how Phil gave us Oprah, which is probably the biggest knock I have against him now, other than I remember him as being a raging liberal that would occasionally have on someone sensible and would actually let that person talk. Not that it ever seemed to sink in with Phil.
