Prototypes For Postal Service’s “Next Generation Delivery Vehicle”

Fox Business

The U.S. Postal Service has confirmed that it plans to award one or multiple contracts for the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle by the end of this year.

The Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) will replace the long-serving Grumman Long Life Vehicle, which went out of production in 1994, but has soldiered on at great maintenance cost all these years. Approximately 180,000 vehicles will be purchased over five to seven years at a cost of $6.3 billion.

The USPS had been aiming to make a decision last year, but had do delay several steps in the process, most recently moving the deadline for NGDV production Request for Proposals to July 14, due to COVID-19. An analysis of the proposals and negotiations with the bidders will now ensue. USPS wonโ€™t comment on the specifics of the process, or what automakers are left, but three candidates remain, according to Trucks.com. More

  1. They’ve already started using them.
    They’re Mercedes.
My mail carrier showed up in one today.
She’s not happy with it except it has ac and heat.
She’s also a little annoyed that they did this when they have much more serious problems.

  2. Where did USPS specify the vehicle must fit between tomb stones to collect mail in ballots? I didn’t see it mentioned, but suspect it’s a priority feature. Demanded by NanP, who controls budget appropriation bills.

  3. They send all my mail 225 miles east before it comes back west or goes on. It can take 5 days for a letter to go 50 miles west of me….BRILLIANT!….2000’s right hand drive CJ7’s here….or Sancho on a burro, but he brings coffee beans too….

  4. ….they should be easy to put on new Fed X, UPS or Amazon graphics. The postmaster here at this one horse town had some back surgery before they go tit’s up….He’s a good company man and is being tight lipped….

  5. The USPS should jump right ahead right to AI-directed delivery drones. Quad-copters for light stuff and octo-copters for bulky things.

Hmm. That reminds me. It’s been a while since I’ve gone to the range with my shotgun.

  6. Lowell- Right???
When I lived in CA, whenever I mailed my friend a bday card, it would go about 30 miles north of us, come back to the humongous post office that was between our towns, and then get sorted and sent to her, 7 miles away. Took 3 days. lol.
