  1. Was Spector a psycho before he made all those hit records or did becoming a celebrity bring out his inner psycho?

Asking for a friend, in case he ever becomes a celebrity, himself.

  2. Dr. Tar: It was said that he fired a gun in the recording studio back in the Wall of Sound days. There were lots of witnesses so I have no reason to doubt the story.

The thing with the wall of wound was, besides all of the instruments, it used heavy compression but sounded very crisp and clean. Compare that with Go All The Way by the Raspberries:

or any Joe Meek recording from the UK:

The first song he wrote was this. The title came from the epitaph on his father’s grave.

His father committed suicide which may explain many of his problems.

  4. Drugs probably made him a bad man.

His 1958 hit “To Know Him is to Love Him”, is a softly beautiful song. He was a backup singer and perhaps the writer and producer.

I guess the subject of the song was not himself.

  5. Arguably the greatest record producer/engineer of all time. Along with Tom Dowd. But that’s another story for another time.

I find it interesting how his achievements in the world of music are overshadowed by his physical appearance. I could go on… but there’s this.

Stick around for the whole thing. Wall of sound indeed… by 6:10 here the music is absolutely overpowering.

  7. An interesting video is him on the Merv Griffin show late summer 1965. He was a guest along with Ertha Kitt and Richard Pryor.

The Watts riots had just ended. He said he bought firearms for personal protection, because we had a little “Vietnam War” situation right there in LA. Then, he jokingly said he started the riot. At one point, Richard Pryor stood up and screamed for some reason.

    The video is on YT.

  9. Proof that talent does not supersede morality and mental health.

Guy was twisted- dunno if he got that way over time or was always so.

He was a damn good producer though.
