Reader’s Brush With Communism

Reader NM wrote me today and said-

Estonia, is celebrating 100 years of independence today!!  Wish I were there to join in.  The Russian occupation of Estonia from 1944 to 1991 was never formally recognized.

Big lump in my throat today as I see all the posts on my Facebook page.  In Toronto, the CN tower is being lit up in the colors of the Estonian flag and there will be a big rally at City Hall.

I was raised (in Canada) to never forget the travesty that was visited on Estonia by the Communists. My parents did good!!  Also, my kids who were born here both speak Estonian.  If you’re ever in the neighborhood, on a Scandinavian cruise or something, do not miss a stop in Estonia.  It’s a fantastic country. – NM

We got to talking. NM sent me a couple of pictures of the same cafe under communist rule in Estonia, and then while communism was collapsing.

The demeanor of the people is palpable. They look beaten down and depressed. I had to ask her a few questions.
.
How quickly does communism put a pall on a country?
I WOULD SAY IMMEDIATELY.  THE PEOPLE BECOME TERRORIZED AND AFRAID FOR THEIR LIVES.  THE BEST SURVIVAL TACTIC IS TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT.  EVEN THEN, IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE, OR ARE ACCUSED OF KNOWING SOMEONE, WHO HAS COMMITTED THOUGHT CRIMES (AT THE VERY LEAST) YOU COULD BE SHIPPED OFF TO SIBERIA OR EXECUTED.

And what goes first? The people get depressed and then the infrastructure goes? Or is it the other way around?
THE PEOPLE GET DEPRESSED FIRST AND ARE TOO BUSY TRYING TO SURVIVE TO CARE ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE.  THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND ARE BUSY ENRICHING THEMSELVES.
Is there ever a period of prosperity and jubilation under communism?
YES.  FOR THE ELITES IN POWER.  MY GOD, THEY COULDN’T EVEN GET COFFEE AND WOMEN WERE S.O.o.L. WHEN IT CAME TO THINGS LIKE TAMPONS OR PADS.  I OFTEN CITE THAT LAST EXAMPLE TO PEOPLE, AND EVEN THAT DOES NOT ALWAYS SINK IN, THOUGH THEY FEIGN SURPRISE.
I wondered how it happened so quickly in Estonia back in 1944 when the Russians marched in.  But they were neighbours and obviously already had all the structures in place for years, since their revolution. Traitors and bureaucrats were willing to be bought off, as well as informers and spies.  My grandparents were told they had 15 minutes to clear out of their farm when the Russians came pounding on the door.
But what do I really know except for what I’ve seen and heard from my relatives who actually lived through it.
.
NM believes that we dodged a bullet with the defeat of Hillary.
Obama was but a prelude to how far left this country would have gone under Clinton. She believes the apparatus for the beginnings of european-style socialism, if not, communism, was being put in place for years.

PJ Media-

“…  In 2010, the FBI arrested ten Russian intelligence officers documented as native-born Americans who were serving as spies in the United States. President Obama then returned them to Russia before they were interrogated by the FBI about their spying tasks.

When I was one of the leaders of the KGB community, among other duties I coordinated Romania’s highly secret department for illegal officers, whose task was to form “skeletons of communist governments” in the U.S. and other NATO countries.

It is also noteworthy that soon after these KGB/FSB illegal officers were returned to Moscow, the CPUSA gave its enthusiastic support to Obama’s re-election bid. …”

  1. I get a “404 Page Does not Exist” at the PJ Media link.

Thanks NM and Fur for the information. I’ve been doing a lot of reading/research lately on what became of all the commies who infiltrated the U.S. gov’t from 1930’s to 1960’s.

  2. @AbagailAdams: “I’ve been doing a lot of reading/research lately on what became of all the commies who infiltrated the U.S. gov’t from 1930’s to 1960’s”

They’re in congress, the DOJ, IRS, FBI, NSA, CIA, and CA, MD, WA, Washington D.C. & spreading like toxic black fungus.

  3. Good read.

To a far less degree I saw the same thing in Spain in the late 70s, not long after the passing of the dictator, Francisco Franco. The people were very subdued. Kind of lifeless.

  4. Reading this stirs up the conspiracy part of me. In 2012, the year of Obama’s re-election bid, the person who caused the most concern to obama was not mittens Romney, but Andrew Breitbart.

A month before his untimely and mysterious death,
Andrew spoke of going to a cocktail party at Bill Aires and Bernardine Dohrn’s house. Why? Not sure. Coincidence? Maybe. It just raises questions.

  5. We have a close family friend from Estonia. He has a tattoo on his arm from his service in the Soviet Army. They don’t wear dog tags. He said you never, ever said anything negative to anyone. Your closest friend/neighbor would report you for extra bread. He also told us that in any gathering, you always wear sunglassess. You see, it’s harder for the KGB to identify you in pictures with sunglasses on your face. When he came to America, he was told that the Democrats were for the poor, so he thought that was the party for him. He said it didn’t take him long to realize that was a lie! He’s a good Conservative. He also told us that the atmosphere was scary around Obama’s election and administration. We needed to do something NOW to stop what was coming. He’s a Trump fan. 🙂
