I will be posting some classic episodes of decades old TV. This is not purely “entertainment.” It’s actually a glimpse of the prevailing culture at the time (albeit maybe a bit corny, or lagging a bit behind reality) but it does offer evidence of where we were as opposed to where we are now.
What went wrong?
The times are different now.
In the late 70’s when I was just getting out of the military my buddies back home told me that this new TV show, Charlie’s Angels, where these 3 pretty girls walk around with no bras, nip bulges everywhere. I couldn’t wait to get home and check it out. I was overseas and had no idea who Farrah Faucet was.
Kate Jackson was on The Rookies
We haven’t had cable for years now. One of the reasons we like streaming is that the old shows are available.
They’re the best.
If they aren’t on Pluto you can many times find them on Youtube.
My grandson loves Walker Texas Ranger. He asks to watch when he comes over.
Beachmom, check out Tubi & Roku-you don’t need to sign up, and minimal ads.
I wasn’t a big fan of this show, but the Retro TV Club is a great idea. Keep ’em coming.
What didn’t go wrong? Much simpler to ask, as I can’t come up with an answer… Maybe I’m just a bit too pessimistic?
I love old westerns. Occasionally I watch them on one of the bigger cable networks. Big enough they put the parental warning crap up on the screen before the movie/episode plays. Well I was watching Have Gun Will Travel early one morning on the network and they displayed a warning I’d never seen before. Paraphrasing, “Warning, not up to current social standards”
Unbeleivable
Chumlee, we do have those!!
Love them!
Amazon has a free channel called Freevee. They get some decent stuff too.
That poster reminds me of one I saw yesterday of the young slut cop and all her male co-cops she slept with.
Black, White, cop-chick liked to screw…
After dumping cable almost 9 years ago, I have enjoyed the free channels I get with the digital antenna. When I watch, it’s typically Rockford Files, Hunter, Hart to Hart, or Andy Griffith.
It’s like a time-capsule from a distant land, where the women are normal/better looking. And other things.
Count me in on the Retro Club.
Watch old “Highway Patrol” episodes w/Brodrick Crawford. Never seen him need more than three shots with his snubnose thirty-eight to put down a bad guy. Modern TV cops need a minimum of at least two full mags for their Glocks to do the same.
The Retro Club is a great idea!
In past cop shows the police chiefs were usually hard nosed battle weary and ready cops. Didn’t matter what their race was. Now, every police chief is 9/10 a powerful blank woman. To which, I laugh, that Carmen Best fit this perfectly in Seattle yet she got the boot because she didn’t embrace CHOP and defunding the police. No outrage upon here departure because it was lefties who gave her the boot.
I don’t know what is do without PlutoRv, Tubi or FreeVee. I watched Gunsmoke yesterday. With modern day TV series I am always bracing for the woke shiv.
FETV (family entertainment TV) shows a lot of old programs on their channel daily including Mannix, Perry Mason, Emergency, Rawhide, etc. The Lone Ranger is on early in the morning at 4 AM PST and on Sat. afternoons. I tend to watch a lot of these old programs which are far better than most of the garbage on TV now. And you know now that Gage or Fireman Chet Kelly would probably be gay now if they did a new version of Emergency. My bet’s on Kelly.
On ‘King of Queens’ last night the black guy, Deacon asked Carrie was it “wrong” of him to want grandkids instead of going to his son’s (gay) bachelor pad?
He thought his son was becoming gay and he wanted to man him up with football practice.
This was only 20 years ago, could never say that today.
Kate Jackson….she sure caused my heart to twitter.
Brad, Have Gun Will Travel had the Asian servants “Hey Boy” & “Hey Girl.”
Shit that would make a leftist’s head explode these days.
Great show BTW!
Loco – that was a good episode. Yeah, A LOT of the stuff said on KoQ could never be said today, especially when Doug, Carrie and Arthur made fun of Danny and Spence being a couple as opposed to roommates.
Loco
That’s what I figured as well.
In regards to:
He thought his son was becoming gay and he wanted to man him up with football practice.
I have a pal that attended a Kings game last week end. Turns out it was LGBQRSTXYZ appreciation night. Didn’t go over well. People were handing the Gay Pride signs back to the people passing them out. Pre Game entertainment bombed. He said you could have heard a pin drop while the Trani’s were shaking their fat asses off on the court. In fact it went so bad, they canceled the half time entertainment.
The best cop show in my opinion was Bosch. Longmire was good too. Not exactly an “oldie” but still a goodie. I also like the old Highway Patrol episodes; filmed around the LA suburbs of my youth.
What about Mannix? That guy got a 1st degree beating every show and still kept at it. Those guys were tough back in the old days.
Mannix, gets the snot beaten out of him every afternoon from 3-5 PM PST on FETV. And on weekends as well preceded by and followed by reruns of Perry Mason. I liked Mannix’s cars especially the Dodge Challenger or early 70’s Plymouth Barracuda convertible that he drove.
One of my favorite TV shows from the 80’s was St Elsewhere. Stellar writing, great ensemble cast with some big names. The ending sucked though.
Trading Places was on cable the other day.
The use of “nigger” by the old guys would never fly today.
I bet if they were still around they would be cancelled.
I noticed Al Franken played a dumbass baggage handler.
Asshole should have kept his day job.
Michael Ontkean! (SIGH) 😉
@Wild Bill I too loved St. Elsewhere and the ending left me flat.
‘Combat’ and ‘The Rat Patrol’ are two shows I miss. Both can be found on youtube. 5 of the best looking guys on Rat Patrol. I still correspond with Gary Raymond after decades and he remains incredibly kind and gracious. He and his wife, Delene Kidd, came to a fandom get together years ago and it was a blast. In his 80’s he is still acting n stage and in ‘Game of Thrones’
I think we have to blame “Seinfeld” for noticing the gay mafia, “you must wear the ribbon” and yet supplicating themselves to it:
“He’s gay, not that there’s anything wrong with it”
