Ric Ocasek – Dead – IOTW Report

Ric Ocasek – Dead

The lead singer/guitarist, Ric Ocasek, of The Cars is dead. He was 75.

Fox-

Ric Ocasek, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame singer whose popular new-wave band, The Cars, helped define the sound of rock music in the late 1970s and ’80s, was found dead in his New York City apartment on Sunday, a police spokesman told Fox News. Ocasek was 75.

His estranged wife, supermodel Paulina Porizkova, found him unresponsive Sunday afternoon at his home in Manhattan’s Gramercy Park neighborhood, sources told the New York Post, adding that he apparently died of natural causes. Police said there was no sign of foul play.

The Cars’ self-titled 1978 debut album was a smash hit, boosted by singles including “Just What I Needed.” The album helped lead the way for new wave’s influence on rock music throughout the following decade.

73 Comments on Ric Ocasek – Dead

  1. I went to art school with his son. He was 2 years behind my class. I’d see him in the school library all the time. He looked just like his Dad with that long neck, super lanky body and dark hair that defied gravity.

I’ve been tuning out talk radio after Rush and rediscovering my 80’s roots in the afternoons. I planned on listening to some Eddie Money tomorrow-and now The Cars? 😢

  2. We all have our time to go.

Thanks Ric, for sharing your music with us.

I was them in ‘78 in Philly, opening (!) for Foreigner. I didn’t even know who they were, or that there was an opening act! I was into photography then (14 years old), and rushed up as close to the stage as I could get. When the Cars came out, I was about 8 feet in front of the lead guitarist, Elliott Easton. I’d just started learning to play guitar. What a great show!! I got some excellent pics of Elliott and the guys. I need to dig them out now.

I’m glad they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The museum in Cleveland is a treasure, if you’re interested in Rock & Roll history and artifacts.

  3. I misspelled Ric. Sorry.

That being said. Did he choke on a ham sandwich?

Sorry. I don’t mean to be flippant. It’s just how I deal with death.

    “I’m an asshole?”

    NO. NEVER.

  4. Sad news. Ironic that earlier tonight I was spinning (yes, vinyl) Parallel Lines by Blondie. Same era. Hanging on the Telephone is such a rocker.

Can you believe that Debbie Harry is 74????

  5. We’re a news outlet.

I’m not going to be called an asshole on my site for writing a normal headline, used for everyone from Elvis to Princess Diana- beloved icons.

Furthermore, I would accept the comment from someone I DIDN’T KNOW!

I’ve been doing this over a decade and suddenly I’m an asshole to a longtime reader because I wrote a headline “Ric Ocasek Dead.”

    Give me a break.

  6. He didn’t hit the big time until his mid thirties. Most rock stars are has -bee s by that age, and most rockers who haven’t made it by 35 never will. And my favorite thing about him, although it took me a while to figure it out, was that he sang like a man, not with the tiresome, screeching falsetto which was so popular in the 1970’s. With that voice, it’s no wonder he bagged a supermodel.

  7. I think that last one was a joke.

Paulina Porizkova, or however you spell it, divorced him last year.

So I guess the answer to that rhetorical question of “Whose gonna drive you home, tonight?” is going to fall to either an ambulance or a hearse.

I loved The Cars. One of my first musical memories was watching their “breakthrough” You Might Think video on Friday Night Videos.

Of course, at the time, Michael Jackson was singing Beat It and roaming around in pool halls with street toughs that might rival Joe Biden’s time as a lifeguard in Delaware.

Ocasek produced as many hits than The Cars made.

With gangly, pale, unattractive gait, he was an inspiration to dorks everywhere. Forever looking like he was walking into the wrong room.

Weezer. I’m looking in your direction.

  8. Gad, but I feel my Lumbago and mine own vast antediluvian age upon whence like a rain falls the drops of sad news that my heroes are but mortal and will pass from this earth to glory.
    And be Dead.

  9. jeez guys … relax

LoBo ~ not taking sides, but I’d say you’re a bit over-reacting to the original post & to Fur’s reaction. taking umbrage to Fur’s post of ‘Dead’ is a bit much, IMO. Fur’s reaction was to say you are ‘DEAD’ to him … get it? … ‘dead’? … basically it’s saying he won’t comment on your post anymore, or your comments on this thread are ‘dead’ to him … according to my interpretation … nothing more

this doesn’t need further escalation … & yes, we are all still just 12 years old, fighting on the playground

… not that there’s anything wrong w/ that

  10. I posted before (up above) I read about the shit hitting the fan.

I agree with @Molon – jeez guys relax.

@Loco – in what way is IOTW suppose to have presented something, a story like this? The death of a social media music icon? This is not an ‘assholeish’ thread!

@BFH – in hindsight would you have presented it different?

How about in the future? Show the birth and death year in your graphic? RO – 1949-2019. Who knows you are the graphic guy.

Just looking for some common ground here.

  11. Loco, just say a couple of Hail Marys…to…Buddy Holly.

That’s where they got IT all from.

Oh, and make a cash donation to the Mets…in IOTW name.

@ Jerry G – the one and only time I saw you and Phil at the Nasauu Coliseum in Long Island? I WALKED OUT!

Who the fuck needs two drummers!?!? AND two rhythm guitarists???

    5
  12. I saw them in Seattle, not in the Colosseum, in maybe the Opera House. I remember it being one hell of a show.

My buddy owned Avalanche Concert Lighting, who provided sound and lighting eq and experience when major acts were in Seattle and got free all access passes to anything I wanted. That was a memorable show.

  13. I was just wondering, at what age do you have to be, that when you die, nobody asks “from what?”, and they just say “from natural causes”. What does that even mean? Curious, since I’m not too far from Ric’s age.

    6
  14. “from what?”

I’d say he died from life- a life well lived, in which he brought happiness to many others. I think he also found that himself, in what he did. That’s all I need to know about how he passed.
    It is sad news.
Bonus tip: make your peace with God the day _before_ you pass.

  15. Thanks Ric,

A video replayed here in my Car on my MTV in 1984
    You might think. . .

Oh well, you might think I’m Crazy
Or maybe you think I’m lucky
    You might think I’m foolish
You think you’re in the movies
    There’s no escape
    Without a scrape
But you kept it going till the sun fell down
    You kept it going

    With your suede blue eyes
Every new boy that you meet
He doesn’t know the real surprise
    She used to be mine
    She’s so fine

  16. Awww! The Cars were one of my favorites. Fun music. Their sound was original. Not like now when the same few producers put out most of the music and it all sounds alike.

  17. What’s wrong with assholes?

    I LOVE em!

    The look!
    The smell!
    The taste!
    The feel!
The muskiness when all covered with hair!
Especially with two big dirt-covered sweaty balls hanging underneath!

I would have been 24 or 25 years old. I still have the T-shirt. It is black, says The Cars Drive American and has a tire track across it.

  19. I was driving down the parkway when My Best Friend’s Girlfriend came on the radio for the very first time. I drove straight to the record store. Wore out the grooves on that LP learning every song. Saw The Cars live soon afterwards and once spotted Ric walking around Manhattan about a decade ago. He must’ve had a good life. All that music AND Paulina. Wow. RIP.
