  1. The first time I heard “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, I was driving my car—I had to pull over to the side of the road to finish listening to it. I was mesmerized, and then crying.

Beautiful music, tragic story. The opening notes still seize me.

  2. Wonderful artist. “If You Could Read My Mind” is one of those songs that always takes me back to a certain place; riding in the Caprice Classic, my dad singing.

  3. Sad to hear of his passing. I also loved listening to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The visual picture that those words painted is stunning. Such a moving song.

  4. Gordon Lightfoot was one of my favorite singer/songwriters when I was growing up in the early 70’s. I first saw him at Kennedy Pavillion on the campus of Gonzaga University just after I graduated from HS in June 1971 and a couple more times during the early 70’s. My favorite Gordon Lightfoot songs were Sit Down Young Stranger, his Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Don Quixote and many others. My wife and I had all of his albums back then and still do. RIP Gordon Lightfoot and thanks for all the good music. He was one of the best from that era.

  5. When I saw the title of the post I thought it was referring to Tim Bachman of Bachman-Turner Overdrive. He died today at 71. Right next to the Guess Who and maybe Bryan Adams, Bachman-Turner overdrive was an absolutely terrific band out of Canada. I listened to a lot of them in the ’70s.

  6. I’ve got a friend that looks like Grizzley Adams and could pick a guitar a little bit. He sounded like Gordon Lightfoot and sang all of his songs…..He got more ass then a toilet seat….

  7. There were lots of good musicians who came out of Canada including Hank Snow (The Singing Ranger) back in the day, who was one of my favorite country musicians. Who still doesn’t like listening to Hello Love or one of my favorite truck driving songs, I’m Moving On.

  8. I was living in the UK during all of 1975 and the sinking of the Edmond Fitzgerald was barely mentioned over there. On the bright side, I missed out on leisure suits and the CB radio craze.

  9. I just had my daughter listen to: “In the early morning rain”, “Sundown” & “If you could read my mind” about an hour ago. She knew them. (21 year old)

My Dad had a greatest hits Vinyl that I used to listen to as a Kid. We didn’t have a lot of Money Growing up and it was VERY RARE for Dad to spend money on a record.

Your “Big 707 set is to Go…”

THANK YOU for the MUSIC Gordie.

  10. So sad to hear. He was a songwriting genius who loved beautiful sounding guitars. Even carried his own controlled humidor to keep them perfect.
Watch his bio, “If You Could Read My Mind – Gordon Lightfoot.” It’s available on Amazon Prime and other outlets. You will walk away with an incredible amount of respect for the man.
    R.I.P. Gordon. 💜

  11. RIP Gordon Lightfoot. My family had a cottage on Lake Ontario; we’d watch the freighters moving east and west across the horizon; The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” was a great song that always reminds me not only of my childhood at the lake, but the how dangerous the Great Lakes are to navigate.

  12. He was a wonderful singer and an even better songwriter–a poet who sang. I was lucky enough to get backstage passes for his show at the Greek Theater in L.A. in 1984, and after that was able to go backstage at a few other venues also, last seeing him in San Diego about 14 years ago. He was friendly and gracious and one of my favorite singers. Thanks for all the music, Gord. 💔
