RIP Burt Reynolds – IOTW Report

RIP Burt Reynolds

He suffered a heart attack.

I enjoyed the guy’s work.

RIP.

Here’s a typical Burt Reynold’s scene, with all the Reynold’s sarcasm, bravado and laughter-

The Citroen car chase from The Longest Yard.

  1. Some of the best years of “Gunsmoke” were when Burt played Quint Asper.

And to a Southern boy who grew up canoeing on North Georgia rivers, “Deliverance” is one of the best movies ever.

    Godspeed, Burt.

  2. His movies for the most part weren’t high cinema art…..you just went to see them for a few hours of laughs and entertainment.
It’s a shame that Hollyweird has forgotten that they’re in the business of entertaining, not preaching.

  3. Just watched Smokey and the Bandit two Weeks ago

and White Lightning the Week before that….

    Try making Smokey again….

“there is no way, no way that you came from my loins, when I get home I’m going to punch your momma right in the mouth.”

  4. I loved that man.
I felt a tinge of sadness a few minutes before I heard the sad news.
I seriously did. I didn’t know why. Now I know.

Hooper was one of my favorite characters along with Gator.
    Mean Machine #22.
    Bandit will forever be iconic.

His laugh alone could make me laugh.
    What a wonderful man.

  5. Reynolds was actually a good actor, but his greatest contribution to the film industry was making movies that were fun and escapist for a couple of hours. With many of his roles, you knew what you were getting before the opening credits, and that was just fine with me.

    Sterling Archer will be heartbroken.

  6. I always got a good grin and a good feeling when watching Burt. One of my favorite movies for more than 40 years has been Semi-Tough. It had a fantastically good cast with Reynolds front and center, plus Kris Kristofferson, Jill Clayburgh, Robert Preston, Lotte Lenya and Bert Convy. Great fun, with lots of send-ups and digs. Highly recommended if you haven’t seen it.

  7. Never one of the typical hollywood snots just a hands down crowd favorite. He even brought something good to the movies that weren’t so good. I ALWAYS enjoyed anything he was in. A unique man that was extremely likable for guys and the ladies.

  8. Dianny, thanks for that info about Burn Notice.
I liked that show a lot but never caught that episode.

BTW, I thought “Burn Notice” would have made a great “reboot” when we had that thread a week or so ago.
Comey, Brennan, Strzok all getting burned and losing their security clearance.

  9. I thought W.W. and the Dixie Kings was hilarious:
    – Oh I wish I was in Dixie, hurray, hurray (had a hidden meaning)
    Sharkey’s Machine was awesome.
But hardly anything could ever top Deliverance.
Burt made some of the best entertainment ever.

  10. I’ve been a fan of him my whole life it seems. My wife, eh, not so much.

I made her watch the unedited Smokey last month and she loved it. After that, I had her watch The Last Movie Star which was his last movie IIRC not counting the one he has in production with Quentin Tarantino.

She cried at the end of it. It’s not his strongest movie, particularly well-written or acted but it is what it is because of who he is – a uniquely American icon carrying a timeless message. It’s on Amazon Prime for free.

Deliverance, The Longest Yard, Gator and on and on. He is up there with the greatest. Sad to see him go but he had not been in a good way for a long time. There are no replacements.

  11. Sad news, but he seemed to have had a fulfilled life. Burt Reynolds is one of my favorite actors. “Sharkey’s Machine” is a great Reynolds film. “Smokey and the Bandit” is a favorite because of Jackie Gleason’s, “Sheriff Buford T. Justice” – my dad loved that movie. Reynolds series, “Evening Shade” was also really good. Burt Reynolds is an American treasure.

  12. Sad news. He was so great in Deliverance and his appearances on Johnny Carson were classic. RIP.

He had such a great laugh and a great sense of humor. Norm MacDonald once said that just before he got fired from SNL they had plans do do another Celebrity Jeopardy and in this one Norm would do his recurring Burt Reynolds impression. But, this time, the real Burt Reynolds would leap out of the audience, punch Norm out and take his place. Then, he would be even dumber than Norm’s impression. Funny stuff.

    RIP.

  13. Mr. Anth Ropy: As soon as I heard the news I too thought about my favorite Burt Reynolds movie, and it was also “W. W. and the Dixiedance Kings.” It begins with his tribute at a drive in movie watching Errol Flynn in the role of the dissipated Mike Campbell in the Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises” with the line “Bung Ho, Old Boy.”

    Bung Ho, Burt!

  14. White Lightning is the one with Ned Beatty as the sheriff, and he did a fine job. The scene I remember is Burt Reynold parked on a street and guns the engine to irritate the Sheriff, then gives him a wicked smile and says something like: “I love the po-lice”.

    Good memories of long-ago movies.
