RIP Charlie Hustle

Pete Rose dead.

  1. Pete Rose was a great ballplayer! That gambling deal is clearly a blemish on his record, stupid to even give the impression of violating the gambling rule. I did see. A recent interview where it was discussed one of Pete Rose’s somewhat unknown lesser known records. Pete Rose played on teams that won over 1900 games. The next closest is Carl Yaztremski(?) at a little over 1700 games won.

  2. If they let Juan Marachal into the Hall of Fame after he bashed a baseball bat over Johnny Roseboro’s head, they can let in Pete Rose. While I cannot condone the gambling, that doesn’t hold a candle to attempted murder.

  3. His 4,256 hits (the most ever) came before he gambled on baseball. Only a few people might know if he gambled on his own team as a player/manager or manager…..He denied he did. The gambling was wrong but not as cheat worthy as the steroid boys, Bonds, Canseco, McGwire, Sosa, Clemons. Those boys should NEVER be allowed in Cooperstown. Pete Rose should be in the Hall Of Fame and the fuckers that decide that should rot in hell because he didn’t get enshrined when he was alive….

  4. Almost every pre game show reports a betting line in some fashion these days – isn’t that a little bit hypocritical to keep Rose tarnished when gambling is main stream now in every sport?

And no one ever claimed or pro ed he altered any result for profit or a bet…

  5. I grew up watching Rose. Met him once. All us kids in Cincy idolized him. When I was in the Navy, the Big Red Machine won the 75 and 76 World Series. What he did to the Yankees leadoff hitter White, was spectacular. Pete came up the third base line and stood maybe 15 feet from White. In 4 games White did not get a hit iirc.

  6. One of my fire chiefs grew up on the West side with him. Said he was a typical punk growing up. Never really detailed why, there was just some personal anymosity there.
We were all kids once, Pete Rose included. Other than that, I only know he did sit there and lie about betting, then made everyone who defended him look like an idiot when he finally admitted it.

…that said, he was an athelete. and a superlative one at that. The type tends to be arrogant and entitled. and if we banned everyone from baseball who did something meatheaded and thought they were untouchable, there’d be like 2 guys left.

I grew up at Riverfront Stadium, and was there when Sparky Anderson used Pete, Johnny, Joe, and a murderer’s row of talent to take two World Series in a day when the whole team costed less than a middle reliever with a high ERA would now. I had the banners and bats and everything, and learned what hometown pride was from them.

Pete Rose was a flawed man. But we all are.

RIP to a man who made the most of his gift and gave one hell of a show to the people who paid to see him, and never tried to parlay it into a political career or bloviate on the Cause of the Day, he just played the game and did it well.

And keeping a dead man from his rightful place in the Hall of Fame, well-earned by his ATHLETIC accomplishments, is just petty and spiteful. You’ll never see a player like him again, let him in.

  7. Perhaps I am mistaken, but I understand Pete Rose never threw a game and his bets were always on his team to win. Perhaps we need a lifetime ban on Senators and Congressmen who earn millions on insider stock trading.

  8. What are they going to do when the Oakland A’s move to Las Vegas in the next 3 to 4 years after a new stadium is built? How will they be able to prevent gambling on baseball in sin city which is notorious for having open gambling in every aspect of Vegas. Will they have slot machines in the new stadium and allow open betting on the games just because its legal to gamble on everything in Vegas. Nothing good will come of the A’s abandoning Oakland for Sacramento and then Vegas when their new stadium is built. I am not an A’s fan but surely the people of Oakland deserve better than to be hosed like this.

  9. You can’t watch any TV Sports these days without some commercials for gambling, called “Gaming” . I remember Pete Rose slamming into Buddy Harrelson SS for the Mets .There was a lot of Bad Blood between the two players until they both joined the Phillies. Buddy Harrelson died earlier this year but while he could still talk about it shared a story that after they became friends Pete Rose sent him a pair of gold boxing gloves that Buddy kept on display. Have a fond memory of Pete Rose being invited to watch the Cubs in their run in the World Series. After a game there he was outside of Wrigley
Field on a mounted platform with the other commentators and two baseball fans held up a banner that read : HILLARY FOR PRISON. It was 2016 and the Cubbies did win the World Series and DJT won the presidency.
